These are the best things to do in Santa Monica if it’s your first time.

“Now, we’re going to add crunches,” our instructor shouted. Our eyes widened as we were both pedaling as hard as our legs could handle. This was our very first cycling class, and it was far more intense than we could imagine.

I wiped the sweat from my brow and stared out at the pink and orange glow on the beach. What a perfect way to end the day, cycling right on the beach during the sunset.

We escaped the Vegas heat to enjoy a weekend getaway in Santa Monica. Even though we lived in LA for a year, we only visited a couple of times. We were excited to explore beyond the pier and beach.

Santa Monica Neighborhoods

Some people mistake Santa Monica for being a neighborhood in LA, but it is its own city. It is best known for its pier and beach but also has eight different neighborhoods.

Downtown / Third Street Promenade has two of the largest shopping areas in Santa Monica with a high concentration of shops, restaurants, and hotels. The farmers market is on Wednesday and Saturday.

Main Street is the artsy side of Santa Monica with surfer vibes. Main St has galleries, boutique shops, and the highest concentration of coffee shops in the city. There’s also a weekly farmers market on Sunday.

Mid-City: The furthest inland neighborhood is an arts and entertainment hub. You’ll find contemporary art collections here as well.

Montana Ave: High-end and local boutique shops. You’ll find 150+ boutique shops and restaurants.

Ocean Park Boulevard / Santa Monica Airport Area: Independent coffee shops, boutique stores, and art galleries. The airport is for private jet owners and the Museum of Flying.

Pico Boulevard: The most ethnically diverse neighborhood and home to Santa Monica College. Small local farmers market on Saturday.

Santa Monica Pier / Ocean AvenueThe most popular area with the famous pier and beach and open-air restaurants and bars.

Wilshire Boulevard: Where Douglas Park is located with playing fields and reflecting pools. A bunch of food options including a concentration of Mexican restaurants.

7 Things to Do in Santa Monica California

1. Santa Monica Pier

200 Santa Monica Pier, 90401, map

The Santa Monica Pier is probably the most recognizable landmark in the city and worth visiting at least once. Whether you want to hop on rides at Pacific Park, ride the historic Merry-Go-Round, or watch the street performers, there’s plenty to keep you busy.

If you read about the Looff Hippodrome, that is actually the carousel. It was built in 1916 when it was called the Looff Pleasure Pier.

Fun Fact: It’s also the end of Route 66, and you can find an end of the trail sign on the pier.

2. Santa Monica State Beach

34.0107301,-118.5176966, map

Since I live in a landlocked state and always miss the beach, we spent most of our time South of the Pier.

Since the beach is so large, running 3.5 miles in length, it’s easiest to break it up into two sections.

The Annenberg Community Beach House and North Beach Playground (great for kids) is North of the pier.

Unique Santa Monica Beach Activities:

  • Original Muscle Beach – Did you know that the Original Muscle Beach is actually at Santa Monica State Beach, not Venice? It’s just south of the pier.
  • Bike along the Marvin Braude Bike Trail – It was a nice way to sightsee, but we primarily used it for transportation.
  • Beach Cycling – we did the class during sunset.

Then you have the typical beach activities like beach volleyball, swimming, etc.

Local Tip: Lyft has bike rentals that you can get right on the app. There is a small unlock fee, and then you pay by the minute. You’ll find plenty of them along the paved pathway on the beach. If you want to ride all day, it’s cheaper to get a rental from one of the local shops.

3. Santa Monica Farmer’s Market

155-199 Arizona Ave, 90401, map

The Santa Monica Farmers Market is a great spot to pick up pastries, produce, flowers, and more. It was one of our favorites when we lived in LA.

Wed/Sat: Arizona Ave (between 4th and Ocean) 8 AM – 1 PM
Sat: Pico Blvd & Cloverfield Blvd 8 AM – 1 PM
Sun: 2640 Main St 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM

Local Tip: Some vendors only take cash but there should be an ATM on site.

4. Montana Avenue

1413 Montana Ave, 90403, map

Montana Ave had my favorite boutique shops. It covers roughly 10 blocks and has over 150 distinct shops and cafes. Our favorites were:

  • Burro – curated collection of stationery, home goods, clothing, gifts, and more. The original store is based in Venice CA.
  • Field Guide LA – Plants and home decor. I wanted to take all the plants and planters home. Unfortunately, it is closed now.
  • Sweet Lady Jane Bakery – famous triple berry cake. Original bakery is in West Hollywood.

5. Palisades Park

1450 Ocean Ave, 90402, map

If you don’t love sand but still want to enjoy ocean views, go to Palisades Park. It overlooks the ocean and you can see all the tourist action down below.

The park is 1.6 miles long and has plenty of grassy areas to hang out on. There’s also a paved pathway where you can bike, run, or skate along.

Besides that, you’ll find public art, a rose garden, historic structures, and Camera Obscura, which houses artists-in-residence and the historic Camera Obscura mechanism (one of the earliest optical inventions).

Local Tip: If you want to avoid the tourist crowds, stay near the northern part of the park. The closer you get to the pier, the more people you’ll see.

6. Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

26876 Mulholland Hwy, Calabasas, CA 91302, map

It always surprises me when you can find nature in the middle of a city. The Santa Monica Mountains is a great spot to get away from all the city noise. It has over 500 miles of trails, historical and cultural sites, old movie ranches, and more.

Local Tip: If you’re not sure where you want to start, stop by their Visitor Center first. Check out their website for any closures.

7. Tongva Park

1615 Ocean Ave, 90401, map

Since Tongva Park is right near the pier, we stopped by to see the popular photo spot that frames the beach and pier.

The park is divided into 4 main sections: Observation Hill, Discovery Hill, Garden Hill, and Gathering Hill.

Where to Eat in Santa Monica

  • Blue Daisy Cafe (Breakfast & Brunch, 💰💰) – Had the Figs, Honey & Goat Cheese Toast and Croissant French Toast, and both were good!
  • Bluestone Lane (Coffee & Tea, 💰) – Aussie-style cafe that was first founded in NYC. Loved their toasts and plant wall.
  • Calabra (Mediterranean, 💰💰) – The food was pretty good. Their lounge-type seating wasn’t as comfortable as we would have liked for a meal, so maybe it’s a better spot for drinks.
  • Father’s Office (Burgers, 💰💰) – famous burger we had more than 5 years ago. We never went back after Jacob was annoyed at their pretentious attitude when he asked if they had ketchup. A simple no would have sufficed. Also, if it was the best burger out there, maybe we’d overlook the service. Who knows? Hoping it’s a better experience for you.
  • Milo & Olive (Italian, 💰💰) – Solid pizzas and pasta.
  • Pasjoli (French, 💰💰💰💰) – Beautifully presented and delicious food.
  • Pono Burger (Burgers, 💰💰) – didn’t get to try their burgers, but people love this spot.
  • Santa Monica Brew Works (Brewpubs, 💰💰) – great spot to hang out and try different beers.
  • The Upper West (New American, 💰💰) – service was fantastic, and we loved everything we ordered, especially the spicy ahi tuna crispy rice.

Essential Tips

  • The Best Time to Visit: Because of its moderate climate year-round, it’s a popular spot to visit any time. Summer is the busiest time with the fewest deals. Nov – February is best to avoid crowds (besides the holidays).
  • Weather: The highs in Santa Monica range from the mid-60s in the winter to the low 70s in the summer. The lows are in the low 50s in the winter and low 60s in the summer.
  • Go Car-less: Santa Monica is very walking-friendly. There are a few public parking spots along the beach and in decks, which costs anywhere from $7-18. Otherwise, we recommend walking, biking, and rideshare to get around.
  • Bikes and Scooters: This was our favorite way to get around. You’ll find a ton of bikes and scooters for rent all over town. Just download the appropriate app. Keep in mind that both should be ridden on the road and not the sidewalk.
  • Pack Layers: It is warm in the afternoons but gets cool in the morning and evenings. We always had a light jacket on us.
  • Pack Walking Shoes: Since you’ll be doing a lot of walking, pack comfortable walking shoes. Lately, we love these for travel. See all our favorite travel shoes here.
  • Want to know what to wear to the airport? These are our ideal airport outfits.

Want to know which California flower fields to visit this spring? Here they are!

Every year I see people posting photos of spring blooms, I tell myself we’re going to go see them too. But every year, we plan too late, and they’ve already come and gone. I’m not much of a flower kind of girl (Jacob knows I will take nice food or booze over flowers any day), but there’s something I love about a whole field of flowers. If they were bugless, I could hang out in them all day.

This year has been the perfect storm for the superbloom in Southern California. Since I’m already obsessed with making daily lists for myself, I decided the best way to get myself to go is to come up with a list of places I want to go see them.

Timing is key with the superbloom, and the low desert is already seeing blooms right now (early March). It’s predicted to last in the high desert until June. Don’t miss your chance to see them!

Essential Tips for Visiting and Photographing the Super Bloom

  • Photo Tip – There are ways to photograph yourself “in” the flowers without going off trail. Shoot with a long lens and at a low vantage point. That will bring the distance between the flowers and you closer together and hide the trails.
  • Go ASAP when you see people post about the super bloom. We saw entire fields disappear in a few days because caterpillars ate them. Did you know they eat 200 times their weight in flowers and leaves?
  • Please respect the flowers so that others can enjoy them too, but respect people too. There’s a growing resentment for people visiting these California flower fields and trampling on the wildflowers. This also upsets us, but we’ve found that kindly educating people is better than shaming them. Since when did flowers become more important than humans?
  • See wildflower updates on Desert USAOther sites haven’t been as accurate and left us disappointed. Pay attention to posting dates and visitation dates since they may differ. You can also see who’s posting recently on #superbloom. I usually look in the captions or ask when they visited since many of them could be latergrams.
  • Heavy Rain in the SouthWest will cause blooms to happen earlier than normal. It will also do some damage to the areas so pay attention to park closures.

Where to Stay to See California Flower Fields

Did You Miss the Spring Bloom Season in California?

If you miss the flowers in SoCal, head up to the PNW. The flowers bloom later there. Check out the best hikes to see Pacific Northwest Wildflowers.

I’ve always wondered by definition what qualifies as a wildflower (I mean… aside from the genetically modified ones… didn’t all flowers come from the wild?) Maybe you already know this, but in case you were wondering, I looked it up after all these years.

It’s simply a flower that grows without any care or nurturing. However, if you take that same flower and plant it in your garden, then it is no longer a wildflower if you intend to keep it alive longer than its natural lifespan. Where my florists/botanists at?

Planning Checklist

Have you been to any of these flower fields in California? Out of these places, where would you be most interested in visiting?

The gates opened and we heard cheering as people slowly filed their way in. After passing the gate, everyone headed with urgency towards the back of the park. Since we’re adults at a conference, we opted to power walk and tried to contain ourselves from going on a mad sprint.

Disney characters waved and there were food stations with a sampling of food from each land, but we couldn’t let them distract us.

After blowing through the other lands, the crowd’s pace slowed as we approached the life-sized X-Wing. Moments later, Chewbacca let out a wail as he struggled with the giant cables. We had made it to Batuu.

The New Disney Star Wars Land - What You Need to Know Before You Go

Let me start off by saying that our experience of Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge was not the norm. During the IPW conference, Disney shut down Disneyland park to give the 6000 attendees an exclusive look at the park. We had Main Street U.S.A, Adventureland, Frontierland, New Orleans Square, Critter Country, and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge all to ourselves.

Needless to say, the majority of the group rushed to see Star Wars first. We were within the first few hundred in the park and didn’t waste any time getting to Galaxy’s Edge.

Afterwards, we chatted with a bunch of the cast members, locals who frequent the park, and as many Disney reps as possible to gather any info we could to pass along.

when does star wars land open?

These are the important dates to remember.

May 31st, 2019 – Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is open to the public. Well… sort of. Between 5/31 and 6/23 you need a reservation to enter the land. No official numbers have been released on how many spots they are allowing each day, but it’s very limited. The exception to the reservation, is if you are staying at a Disney owned hotel. They will provide you with a reservation during your stay.

Jun 24, 2019 – This is when it’s open to everyone else without a reservation. They expect the park to be at full capacity, and entrance to Galaxy’s Edge isn’t guaranteed. If you’re lucky enough to make it in, they are limiting your time to four hours. You’ll be able to queue virtually through their app so you can spend time at the rest of the park.

Entering Star Wars Land at Disneyland

There are three entrances to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. We were all routed towards the West entrance near Critter County. From here, you pass by the entrance of the unopened attraction, get a view of the X-Wing as you enter.

The South and East entrance are close together. The South comes up along the West side of Big Thunder, and takes you the Droid Depot. The East entrance comes from Fantasy Land and brings you to the Milk Stand and First Order Cargo.

No matter what entrance you come through, you’re immediately immersed in the land and all the cast members add to that by always staying in character. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge transports you to the planet of Batuu where you’ll explore the Black Spire Outpost.

Pro Tip: Talk to the locals of Batuu. To get you started on Batuuese, here are a. few phrases:

  • “Bright suns” – good morning
  • “Rising moons” – good evening
  • “May the spires keep you” or “Til the Spires” – goodbye
  • Refreshers – restrooms

Where do I start?

There are two main attractions at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The first is the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. The second, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, is not open yet. Besides that, Oga’s Cantina , Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers, and the Droid Depot have a big draw. You can also try blue and green milk at the Milk Stand, or pick up food and goodies at the marketplaces.

The attention to detail is absolutely mind-blowing. So even when you’re walking around, keep your eye out for the little things others might miss.

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run Star Wars Ride

This is currently the biggest attraction and most memorable experience in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Before entering, you’re met with a full size replica of the Millennium Falcon. The line will take you along the backside of the Falcon and you’ll even get a peek of it from the second floor.

After the first section of the line, you enter a room where Hondo Ohnaka greets you and gives you the run down of why you’re there. The animatronics on Hondo look incredible! Afterwards, you’re put into groups of 6 and wait your turn in the Falcon’s Chess Room. We only waited 10-15 minutes to get up to this point and honestly lost track of time after that because we were geeking out and taking a bunch of photos.

The group you join has three different roles: pilots, gunners, and engineers. When they group you, they hand out the cards at random, but if you know people in your group, you can trade before starting the ride.

  • Pilots: One controls horizontal movement and the other controls vertical movements
  • Gunners: Each person controls the Falcon’s guns
  • Engineer: Fixes the ship and performs other misc tasks

I was a pilot and Esther was a gunner. The pilot is the most involved role since you have to steer the ship and mash buttons as instructed. I was the right pilot controlling the vertical movements and I also got the chance to put the Falcon into light speed. The gunners have buttons on the side that they mash when shooting. Neither of us did the engineer job but it looked similar. The most fun job is the pilot since you have the most to do.

The ride is a simulator ride plus a video game tutorial. Hondo gives you instructions throughout the ride and buttons light up to signal what you’re supposed to do. As a team, your job is to execute the commands as best as you can. Our team didn’t do so well… but we had fun!

Local Tip: There will be no fast passes for this ride so be prepared for a long wait.

Star Wars Cantina (Oga's Cantina)

Oga’s Cantina wasn’t open during our visit. We were able to see the interior, but they weren’t serving drinks, which was such a bummer! On the plus side, we got a chance to see the interior without waiting a couple of hours.

Normally, they have drinks that range from $7 – $42. I’ve seen photos of the drinks, and they truly look out of this world. After talking with one of the locals at the bar, they told us that the wait to get inside has been roughly 2 hours. Once you get in, there’s a 45 minute limit for any of the booths or standing tables. The bar technically doesn’t have a limit, but they’ve been cycling people in and out after about an hour.

We’ll be back to try the drinks later. In the meantime, if you have any photos of your experience, send them our way. Drinks will be the same at both locations. Here’s a sampling of what they have on their menu (how many references do you get?):

Drinks with Alcohol

  • Bespin Fizz
  • Bloody Rancor
  • Dagobah Slug Slinger
  • Fuzzy Tauntaun
  • Jedi Mind Trick
  • Jet Juice
  • The Outer Rim
  • Spriran Caf
  • T-16 Skyhopper
  • Yub Nub

Non-Alcoholic Drinks

  • Black Spire Brew
  • Blue Bantha
  • Carbon Freeze
  • Cliff Dweller
  • Hyperdrive Punch It!
  • Jabba Juice
  • Moogan Tea
  • Tarine Tea

Local Tip: Enjoy the Droid DJ. He was relocated from the previous Star Tours ride.

Build Your Own Star Wars Droid at Droid Depot OR Lightsaber at Savi's Workshop

There are two main interactive shops at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The first is the Droid Depot, where you can custom build your own droid (R-series or BB-series) starting at $100. The decor in the depot is really cool. There are conveyor belts of droid parts running along the wall and ceiling. The droids that you build will interact with elements in the land and your behavior. You can even purchase additional programming chips and accessories to add abilities to your droid. There are pre-made droids you can purchase too. Even if you decide not to purchase a droid, you can still see the process and watch other people make theirs. There’s also a life size R2D2 that you can take a photo with (and purchase).

Around the corner from the Droid Depot is an unmarked check in station where you can build your own lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop for $200. Under the guise of a scrap shop, you can only enter if you purchase a lightsaber. We didn’t do it and Jacob is still kicking himself for it. Especially since there was no wait, and on regular days, the wait can be 2+ hours. During the experience, you pick one of four options:

  • Peace Justice (modeled after Jedi from the Republic era)
  • Power Control (Sith)
  • Elemental Nature (harnesses the elements)
  • Defense (shrouded in mystery)
Each builder can bring one guest in with them. The saber comes with a carrying case and 31 inch blade.

Local Tip: If you ask around for where the lightsaber workshop is, cast members will remind you to keep your voice down. The First Order roams the grounds looking for any one with the Resistance, so you don’t want to give away who you are.

Shopping and Food

Beyond those main attractions, there other plenty of other nooks and crannies to explore in Batuu. Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, you should still walk around to see all the different shops.

For food, Oga’s Cantina will be the biggest attraction, but check out these other spots as well:

  • Kat Saka’s Kettle – sweet and savory snack made with popcorn
  • Ronto Roasters – grilled sausage and roasted pork wraps
  • Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs – exotic dishes (nicer dishes)
  • Milk Stand – green & blue milk

There are several shops to check out. The hard part is deciding what you want to bring home.

  • The Market
    • Resistance Supply – resistance themed items
    • Creature Stall – exotic creatures (puppets)
    • Toydarian Toymaker – artisanal toys and games
    • Black Spire Outfitters – get a robe or other local garb
    • Jewels of Bith – local goods and trinkets
  • Black Spire Outpost
    • Dok-ondar’s Den of Antiquities – collectable items
    • First Order Cargo – first order themed gear

Pro Tip : Browse through the shops before deciding what you want to buy

Kat Sakas Kettle - First Timers Guide to Star Wars Land Disneyland

Download the Play Disney Parks App

We were so excited to get photos and check out the land, that we missed out on using the app at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. After arriving to planet Batuu, the app turns into the Star Wars: Datapad where you get to find easter eggs within the land. You can interact with droids, scan crates, and translate the alien languages seen throughout Batuu. You’ll even collect digital rewards, like ship schematics, star maps, and more. This is something we’ll try next time.

Fun Facts

  • John Williams created original music for Galaxy’s Edge.
  • Orlando’s Galaxy’s Edge is exactly the same as Disneyland’s. The only difference is that they face different directions.
  • Orlando’s location is scheduled to open in August.
  • We’ve heard rumors that Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is supposed to open at both locations in August, although because it’s so technologically advanced, there may be delays.

Here are the best places to eat in Los Angeles. The list is always evolving.

Although we didn’t try as many places as I would have liked while living in LA, I felt like one year was enough time to explore our options and gave us the extra urgency to get out there and try different spots.

I remember while we lived in Atlanta, we just got so comfortable eating at the local spots within a 5 mile radius. In LA, we almost always had to brave the traffic. We sometimes even had to wait 3 hours before getting seated, BUT we ultimately ended up with a mix of good food.

We still visit a few times a year, so check back here as we’ll be adding more and replacing our favorite places to eat.

Visiting Los Angeles? Don’t miss these awesome photo spots.

How do you plan your travels? Lately, I’ve been using Instagram since I like visually seeing my options. We decided to begin a new series on instagram spots starting with the most instagrammable places in Los Angeles.

There is so much to eat, see, and do in LA, but there are some specific spots that instagrammers flock to.

Some of the more touristy and obvious ones are the Hollywood SignHollywood Walk of FameHollywood Bowl, and The Getty Center, just to name a few.

It makes perfect sense that they’d also be popular on instagram. But this is a list of instagram spots in LA that even local igers can’t resist.

TLDR

📍 Location – Los Angeles is located in Southern California. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, with mountains and desert areas surrounding it. It’s the largest city in California and the second-largest in the U.S., known for Hollywood, beaches, entertainment, and diverse culture.

📸 Photography Spot – It is a great city for photos, with tons of Instagrammable murals, iconic landmarks, diverse landscapes, and cute restaurants.

Visiting Los Angeles? Use this bucket list to plan your trip.

We lived in LA last year, and while we didn’t think it was a place we wanted to settle down, we still loved that there’s always something to do in LA (and eat). We’ve still been staying in LA one week out of every month since we moved to Las Vegas. The funny thing is (and I’m sure most people who live in LA agree) when we lived in LA, we didn’t want to drive anywhere. Now that we moved away, we’re exploring much more of the city. Now that we’re coming in from out of town, our friends are also more likely to meet us too.

Just like our Las Vegas bucket list that we’re quickly checking off, we created one for LA with a mix of both touristy and off the beaten path activities.

Having lived in LA for a year, we only scratched the surface of everything to explore in town. Because we lived in NoHo, we regularly spent time in Burbank for Porto’s Bakery and movie theater, but we didn’t realize all the things we were passing by on the way.

Besides being home to giant studios like Warner Bros. Studios & The Walt Disney Company, there are plenty of film locations that you can visit on your own. You can walk the streets, dine at, or play at some of the same places your favorite movies and TV shows were filmed. There were even a few places we had been to and never realized that they were filming locations. We loved getting a look behind the filmmaking process and had some fun recreating some of the shots from the movies too!

To help you get started, we’ve put together a guide so that you can do a self-guided tour of the area.

Besides doing a self-guided tour, you can check out the Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood and try to catch a live taping of one of your favorite shows (we saw Conan back in the day). Also, don’t forget to check out the four major neighborhoods in Burbank.

  • Downtown Burbank is full of shopping, bars, restaurants, and the largest AMC in the nation.
  • Magnolia Park is a hip and quirky district where you can shop at boutiques and find small cafes and eats.
  • Media District is where the Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros studios are.
  • Airport District is a convenient travel hub with plenty of shopping and conference hotels.

PRO TIPS FOR FIRST TIME VISITORS

  • Book your hotel directly from Visit Burbank and receive a $50 gift card just for booking!
  • Burbank has its own airport, which is much easier to deal with than the massive LAX. You can get in and out of town without dealing with all the crowds and traffic.
  • If you love the outdoors, there are great hikes in the city.
  • Burbank is a great place to stay if you’re planning on going the Universal Hollywood. It’s just down the street and you’ll be surrounded by a ton of great shopping and food.
  • During our weekend in Burbank, we stayed at the Tangerine Hotel, which is within walking distance to a bunch of eateries. If any of the places are too busy, you can even take food to go and enjoy it poolside.

Have you seen any of these movies/shows? Which of these filming locations would you want to see most?

Along the Stanley Kubrick exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, we decided to check out the rest of the museum. We bought a special timed ticket for the Kubrick exhibit for $20, which includes all of LACMA.

It’s a big museum, especially compared to the ones in Atlanta. Everything is spaced out, and I like big open spaces. Also, the public walking spaces are really nice.
