What is Amangiri Like? – At First Glance

Since we live in Las Vegas, we took a four-hour road trip here. Past a call box and through a discreet gate, we followed an unmarked private road for several miles.

When you finally reach the property, rather than entering into a grand lobby, it almost feels like you’ve stumbled upon a secret society or fortress in the desert.

Friends have asked me if it has White Lotus vibes. At first glance, no. They are all about understated luxury, rather than opulence. Think Zen minimalism meets nature.

That said, it could easily be the setting for a future season.

Amangiri Pool + Desert Modernism

The resort blends seamlessly into the backdrop of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and was co-designed by three architects: Marwan Al-Sayed, Wendell Burnette, and Rick Joy. The pool wraps around a striking sandstone monolith, nicknamed the “Praying Monk,” and looks like a work of art.

Amangiri Desert Pool Suite

There are 34 suites total. Between staying for four nights or opting for a larger suite for two nights, we chose the latter, which included a plunge pool and a sky terrace for stargazing. Our Aman junkie friends told us the sky terrace was their favorite part.

Since we visited in March instead of during peak Milky Way season, I created a composite using an astroshot I took in Bryce Canyon.

Amangiri Food vs Camp Sarika Food

Our friend’s first piece of advice? Have dinner at Camp Sarika every night. It’s a prix fixe menu and a better dining experience. We ordered room service for breakfast and had lunch on the main property, either by the main pool or overlooking Grand Staircase-Escalante.

The food was good, but not exceptional. If you’re expecting three-Michelin-star food, your expectations are too high. The gem salad was my favorite item on the lunch menu, and I didn’t find the Camp Sarika courses particularly memorable. Still, I was content and thought everything fell within my expectations.

Pro Tip: Make reservations at Camp Sarika every night. Seats may fill up.

Artist in Residence – Ulrike Arnold

Since I’m in my art era, I loved meeting Ulrike Arnold, who paints with pigments from the land. Her pieces sold at Amangiri were made from materials found on the property.

Currently, I’m experimenting with various mediums and styles, but her work inspired me to explore beyond traditional mediums. I can’t wait to discover what I can call my own art style in the future.

Things to Do near Amangiri

Since we had already explored this part of Utah on past trips, we stayed on property the entire time to soak in every amenity. I treated it like a luxury wellness retreat, spending my day painting the view from our room and learning sashiko, a traditional Japanese hand-stitching technique.

If you’ve never been to the area, these are our favorite places:

They also have hiking trails and a via ferrata on site.

Was it worth the Price?

This is not your average hotel stay. It’s a bucket list destination in itself, at least for us, who are not the Kardashians or the Zuckerbergs of the world.

Whether it’s worth the spend depends solely on you. I saw photos of it years ago and knew I would want to take photos here someday. Having worked in the travel industry for over 10 years, staying here was aspirational.

While chatting with some friends, the consensus was that after a certain price point, the returns on services or tangible upgrades diminish a lot. After that, you’re paying for more privacy and exclusivity. However, staying here felt like I was living in a James Turrell art installation.

With your room rate, pretty much everything is included except alcohol, spa treatments, and private excursions. It includes all your meals for two guests, in-room refreshments with snacks, guided group hikes, group fitness classes, use of the fitness center and water pavilion, internet, self-guided hikes, and custom itinerary planning services.

Amangiri was an absolute dream for me.

For Jacob? He would not pay for it if it were just him, but he told me it was worth seeing me happy.

Would we stay here again?

There are plenty of other places we want to see and stay at before considering a return visit. But that’s with most places.

How to Get to Amangiri

Since we were within driving distance, we drove there ourselves. Other travelers arrive via Aman’s private car service from the nearby airport, rental car, or private jet.

The closest international airports are Las Vegas, NV (LAS) and Phoenix, AZ (PHX). Both are roughly 4.5 hours away.

For domestic flights, you can look for flights into Page, AZ (PGA) from Phoenix, which is only 25 minutes away from Amangiri. Amangiri offers complimentary airport transfers from Page, AZ. You could also look into St George, UT (SGU) or Flagstaff, AZ (FLG) but will still need to rent a car from these airports.

Planning a visit to Green Valley Ranch and Spa? Don’t miss these things!

Most visitors stay on the Strip, but if you talk to locals, their favorite casinos are the Station Casinos. Green Valley Ranch is the Station Casino located in Henderson, Nevada.

It’s a luxurious resort with stunning Mediterranean-inspired architecture, lush gardens, and impeccable attention to detail. It offers a one-of-a-kind experience for travelers looking for a unique escape from its award-winning spa to its casino and delicious dining options.

The resort has over 450 luxurious guest rooms and suites, various dining options, a full-service spa, a beautiful pool, a casino, and more.

Parking is free at the resort, with options to park in uncovered areas or on a parking deck.

7 Best Things to Do in Green Valley Ranch

1. Have a Spa Day

We started our staycation with a 60-minute couples massage to get us in relaxation mode.

One of the unique features of the Spa at Green Valley Ranch is the hydrotherapy circuit. This circuit consists of heated hydrotherapy pools, hot tubs, and eucalyptus steam rooms designed to promote relaxation and detoxification. You can follow at your own pace, spending as much time as you want in each area.

In addition to the hydrotherapy circuit, the spa has a full-service salon that offers hair styling, nail care, and makeup services.

Local Tip: Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the facilities after your treatment, including saunas, hot tubs, and the gym. We unfortunately booked something right after our massage and wished we spent more time here.

2. Play Bingo

We played Bingo once years ago at a brewery when we first lived in Las Vegas, and this was the first time playing since then. It was much more fun than I remember (probably because we won twice)!

Bingo games run throughout the day, and you can go old school with paper and dauber or new school with the electronic screens they provide. We tried both to see what the experience was like.

There is something fun about marking it on your own, but it can get stressful. Next time we go, we’re sticking with the screens. It does everything for you except for yelling Bingo when you win. That way, you can focus on hanging out over fretting over keeping up with the numbers.

Local Tip: For a fun group night out, check out Rock Shot Bingo. These monthly themed events are like a party. There’s a DJ, and everyone uses the screens so you can drink and dance. Plus, if someone at your table wins, everyone gets a shot!

3. Relax by the Pool

The pool at Green Valley Ranch is one of the resort’s most popular attractions. This sprawling, multi-level pool complex is perfect for soaking up the sun and cooling off. Surrounded by lush greenery, palm trees, and cabanas, the pool offers a tropical oasis right in the heart of the Nevada desert.

They have multiple pools, including a main pool with natural sand and an adults-only pool. The cabanas are available for rent and include private seating areas. They also serve delicious food and drinks, including sushi and a massive Dole Whip. See our Wes Anderson Style GVR Pool reel here.

Local Tip: The public can also use the pool, but it hits capacity on the weekends during the summer. If you want to spend time at the pool, make a reservation 2-3 weeks in advance.

4. Go to a Movie

Jacob loves watching movies. I go for the movie theater popcorn and Icees. The theater is the perfect place to relax, especially on hot days. It’s a Regal, so they typically show the latest movies and have plenty of movie times to choose from.

Local Tip: They have movie deals on Tuesdays (for Regal Crown Club members. It’s free to join) and a subscription plan for all-you-can-see movies each month if you’re interested. Just ask any of the employees at the box office for more details.

5. Grab a Drink at One of the Bars

Green Valley Ranch has several bars to enjoy a cocktail or two. We hung out at Drop Bar after dinner for some yummy drinks. Here is a list of bars:

  • Drop Bar – Located in the heart of the casino floor with a chic design and hand-crafted cocktails. They also have live DJs here on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Lobby Bar – Laid back environment right in the lobby. There’s also a private patio to enjoy when the weather is nice. It’s an excellent spot if you’re looking for a quieter environment.
  • Sidebar – Located next to the rewards center, this is the newest bar and a great spot to grab a drink when you need a break from gambling.
  • Sip Bar – Tucked away on the casino floor, this is a local favorite for a premier selection of martinis.
  • Sports Bar – Located in the Sports Books, this is where you want to go if you’re watching the game.

6. See a Concert

Green Valley Ranch hosts concerts and live music at a few different concert venues. In addition, they host artists at Hank’s and DJs at Drop Bar.

7. Dinner Date

There are some great restaurants at GVR! We have a list of all the food options and more photos below, but two spots you should check out are Hank’s and Bottiglia.

If you’re hankering 😉 for a steak, Hank’s Fine Steaks & Martinis is where the locals go for high-quality, aged steaks. They have an extensive selection of fine wines and handcrafted cocktails, including their signature martini, made with dry ice for a dramatic effect.

Bottiglia Cucina & Enoteca is a more laid-back spot focusing on Italian cuisine with an extensive wine list. On the weekends, they have a brunch menu and cute outdoor seating for when the weather is nice. If you love pasta, you have to try the Mushroom Truffle Tagliatelle. It was, hands down, our favorite dish!

Green Valley Ranch does a pop-up lounge near the pool twice a year. Spring at the Terrace and Winter at the Terrace have themed menus that are super cute. In the winter, they set up cozy igloos and fire pits; in the spring, they have private pergolas and fire pits.

Ever since we lived in an RV for 3 months, we fell in love with RV life. Every time we see one on the road, we point it out, and time to time, we browse online to see which model we should add to our family. When we purchased a car this year, one of our priorities was towing capability so that we could eventually add a trailer. While we’re saving up for an RV, we’re scratching our RV itch by renting one and going on a trip next month.

The Different Classes of RVs - Which One is Right for You?

Since attending RVX earlier this year and seeing all the best of the best, we’ve been excited to try out different types of RVs. When we were full time RVing for 3 months, we lived in an Airstream and loved our time in it, but before we settle on what exactly we want to purchase, we decided to try a different type of RV for our upcoming trip.

If you’re new to RVing, there are tons of different options to fit every lifestyle and travel style. To help you pick, we’ve listed some of the most popular types of RVs and our thoughts on them.

Class A

Out of all the classes of RVs, this is the big boy. It’s the biggest class out there built on a truck chassis. They often look like huge buses. The interiors of these things are luxurious! Check out the photos below – it’s bigger than our apartment was in NYC.

If you plan on living in an RV full time or are traveling with a big group, this gives you the most amount of space and luxury. Most people tow a smaller vehicle so they can maneuver around town too.

PROS

  • Large living space
  • Lots of storage and cargo
  • Most luxurious amenities

CONS

  • Largest to drive / can be most intimidating
  • Can’t easily take day trips (unless you tow a vehicle)
  • Expensive to purchase, repair, and insure
Class A RV vs Other Classes of RVs

Class B

Campervans with raised roofs. These cover a wide range of vans from smaller ones that are converted vans to larger ones built on a Mercedes Benz Sprinter chassis.

We’ve stayed in a really basic campervan that had a bed and kitchen, which works for a weekend, but we want to experience one that actually has standing room and a bathroom to see if it’s something easier to live in for an extended period.

PROS

  • Easy to drive and maneuver
  • Less costly fuel and maintenance
  • Convenient for excursions

CONS

  • Limited amenities
  • Smaller interior living space
  • Less storage and cargo

Class C

Built onto a minimal truck or van chassis. Usually looks like a big box with the front of a truck and ranges from 20 to 33 feet. Most of the branded rented RVs you see on the road are Class C. It’s a popular introduction to RVing, although aesthetically we don’t like them as much.

PROS

  • Has all the basic necessities
  • Extra space above the driver’s cab
  • Self-contained

CONS

  • Pricey to maintain and operate
  • Some luxury amenities may not be available
  • Difficult to take on excursions due to larger size

Travel Trailer

Trailer that is towed by a truck or SUV. These come in all shapes and sizes. Most of them are boxier, but we really loved our Airstream travel trailer because it was such a sleek design.

We also liked that we could leave the trailer in the RV park when we were exploring. The downside is that if we wanted to access the trailer when we were on the road, we had to pull over.

PROS

  • Can tow with a variety of vehicles
  • Towing vehicle can be used for day trips
  • Lots of different options and models

CONS

  • Can be hard to maneuver in restricted areas
  • Learning curve to drive
  • M0re difficult to drive in reverse
The Different Types of Trailers

5th Wheel Trailers

Similar to travel trailers but connects to a truck in the bed of the vehicle.

PROS

  • Better connection to the towing vehicle
  • Overhanging section gives more space
  • Plenty of options for amenities

CONS

  • Limited types of towing vehicles
  • Less passenger space on long trips
  • Difficult to maneuver in restricted spaces

Pop Up Camper

Lightweight trailer that folds up when traveling but expands when camping. We saw some interesting pop up camper models during RVX. They seem great for weekend trips or if you love camping. Since it folds down, it also makes it easier and more aerodynamic for towing.

PROS

  • Lightweight and easy to maneuver
  • Wide range of towing vehicles
  • Inexpensive to own and operate

CONS

  • Limited interior space
  • Little to no cargo and storage
  • More exposure to weather

Renting from Outdoorsy

Checking out RVs online or in a showroom can only do so much. We were initially intimidated by RV life, but after a few days experiencing it, we knew we wanted one of our own. Whether you just want to try it out for a weekend, or are considering purchasing your own, we always recommend renting to test out the waters first.

We rented our RV from Outdoorsy.com, the largest RV rental marketplace. Unlike other companies that only carry the same classes of RVs, it had every type imaginable. After browsing the site for days to see what was available in our area, we decided to try a Class B van with a slide-out and bathroom – check it out here. We’re excited to give vanlife a try. You can also search for rentals at GoRVing.com.

Pro Tip: If you have any questions, you can contact the RV owners to chat in more detail. I reached out to ask about our RV before renting.

Renting an RV - Classes of RVs Compared - Pros and Cons of Each

Deciding Where to Go

After renting our RV, we had to decide where to go. It’s hot in the Southwest during the summer but since we’re limited on time, we decided not to go too far. We wanted to prioritize two things we love – photography and the outdoors.

Even though we love those two things, we have a hard time waking up for sunrises. We’re both not morning people, and if it takes effort to get out somewhere, we tend to bring each other down and stay in bed instead. That changed with our first RV experience. We found that if we were right where we needed to be, it was a lot easier to roll out of bed and step outside for the views.

Even though we’ve lived in LA, San Diego, and Vegas, we’ve never made it out to Bishop or Alabama Hills. We’ll be heading out there to do some early morning climbing, hiking, and taking plenty of photos.

We can’t wait to share our trip with you as well as our thoughts on the Class B motorhome. If you want to come climb with us or hang out, send us a note and we’ll let you know our plans.

If you only started following us recently, we lived in an Airstream for three months. I still vividly remember the first time I got behind the wheel. It was equally exciting and intimidating, but after a few moments on the road, the excitement overcame all my other emotions. There were definitely new aspects to living on the road that we had to learn, but it was a lot easier than we thought it would be and we absolutely loved how free it felt to go and live anywhere.

What we Look for in an RV

Since leaving our Airstream, we still talk about getting back into an RV. We recently bought a car (we’ll be sharing more about that in a future post), and one of our must-haves was the ability to tow at least 5,000 lbs. Our current plan is to eventually get an RV that we can live on the road with 2-3 months at a time out of the year.

Even though we’re pretty familiar with the RV world, there were still so many types of RVs we had never seen. There really is something for every budget and lifestyle. Want to go all out with a patio, garage, spacious bathroom, reclining chairs, and washer/dryer? You’ll find plenty of luxury options. Prefer something eco-friendly and sustainable? They have an all-electric RV. Looking for something that’s easy to get around in since you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors? Plus, there’s everything in between.

We prefer a mix of luxury and convenience and of course something photogenic. The huge RVs are luxurious. The amount of comfort and amenities that they have always wow us. We spent a lot of time during the show hanging out inside these RVs. We still want the luxury of an RV, but in something more compact so we can move easily. The trailer setup is also interesting since it lets us leave our home base and still take our car out for micro-adventures in the area.

RVS RV Conference

We had a chance to attend RVX: The RV Experience with Go RVing’s Kickoff to Camping Season. As a trade-only event, we got an exclusive look into the RV industry and all the exciting innovations that are happening.

One of the most exciting moments at the conference was The Reveal, where they highlighted the industry’s best new products. They had nine different categories and a panel of consumer media and social media experts selected their faves. It really shows you how wide of a selection there is within the RV world.

This Atlanta landmark was always known as the melting pot hotel of city. It was first built as an apartment building, and then renovated into a hotel a few years later. The basement space was regularly occupied by interchanging nightclubs and eventually became the world-famous Clermont Lounge. Tons of celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher, Lady Gaga, and Marilyn Manson like to visit when they’re in the A. The hotel was eventually shut down in 2009, but later reopened as a swanky, boutique hotel in early 2018. The decor reflects its colorful past, the rooms lined with floral wallpaper and gracefully old, yet funky furnishings. You can also find one of the hottest rooftop bars in Atlanta atop the hotel. Listed below are our favorite and best places to stay in Asheville broken up by categories.

Glamping + Unique Places to Stay

703 State Rd 1124, Marshall, NC 28753 // map
18 miles to city center (25 mins)

This cabin sleeps 10 people, has 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. The 360-degree views here are jaw-dropping and pristine. Be prepared for the rare feeling of complete privacy. We drank our coffee each morning and watched the birds whip in and out of their wooden birdhouses with the backdrop of the mountains behind them. There are upper and lower decks on the cabin and a large gazebo across the driveway with an open fireplace and rocking chairs.

Bear Creek Cabin is located on 50 acres of private land and is only 7 minutes outside of the town of Marshall. The town is a cute little place worth exploring due to a fistful of restaurants, a bar, two health food stores and several art galleries. Two days of this kind of quiet living and I thought I’d never want to leave!

Asheville Stay is wonderfully unique. They can accommodate the solo traveler looking for respite after a fun day exploring the city, as well as an entire wedding party or family reunion! No really, they can book up to 70 people at a time. There are 12 of these vacation rentals, which range from private one-bedroom lairs to spacious lofts that can accommodate 10 people, all within blocks of each other in the heart of downtown.

They have comfortable, well-equipped kitchens, a washer and dryer, provide local coffee, earth-friendly soaps and detergents. All of these lofts are very spacious and feel open with lots of natural light. Private, keyless entry also makes it easy to come and go. Had I known about these when I was adventuring in Asheville long before I knew Caroline, this is where I would have chosen to stay!

Asheville Glamping

(828) 450-9745

Made up of 3 properties various distances from city center (1 is 18 minutes from city center, 2 are 5 miles from city center), there are several different glamping options if you choose to stay with Asheville Glamping. Pick from a luxurious yurt, a romantic dome, a retro vintage camper/ trailer and even a tipi! If you like adventure but don’t want to sacrifice all of the creature comforts, give this place a look.

Each rental is truly unique as are the settings. You can pick the yurt with absolute privacy or the Glaminal that sits around a communal campfire pit. Our favorite pick is the Silver Bettie, cause after all, why wouldn’t you pick to soak in a hot tub if you can? Shuttles are available upon request!

87 Richmond Hill Drive, Asheville, NC 28806 // map
3.3 miles to city center (8 minutes)
(828) 252-7313

Start your day with a complimentary breakfast, then choose how you want to unwind. Stroll the Tranquility Trail, meditate in the meditation room or Serenity Garden, join an Embodiment Class, take part in a massage, or even spend time in a sauna. The common areas are cell phone and electronic free zones.

Luxury Hotels in Asheville

16 Church Street, Asheville, NC 28801 // map
0.3 miles to city center (7 mins)
888.699.2987

The Lofts at 16 Church are located in one of the best and most beautiful spots in downtown Asheville. Mature trees flank both sides of the street and the city is literally outside of your doorstep. If you’re looking for a home away from home, enjoy a sunny deck, and love being in a central location, this is the place for you.

There are four lofts and they have beautiful red brick walls, arched windows, open decks and heart pine floors. The furniture is modern and comfortable with an easy to use kitchen that has beautiful granite countertops, a large full bathroom and even a half-bath and a washer and dryer. The two upstairs lofts have multiple skylights that make the high ceilings seem even taller and keyless entry makes it easy to come and go. When family comes to town, this is where we recommend they stay!

This was definitely the nicest place we stayed last year. It was an amazing experience having this space as our home away from home. We spent a lot of time exploring Central Park, which was only a couple blocks away but also had the comfort of knowing we had a nice retreat away from the hustle and bustle of NYC.

What motivates you to travel or take a vacation? We both have always loved traveling and the more we travel, the more we realize how big of a world is out there to discover. The reason we travel or explore locally all comes down to that one word: adventure! We’re always looking to taste, photograph, and try new experiences.

This past year has been all about new experiences. We had a lot of firsts. We snorkeled with whale sharks, got dive certified, started rock climbing, went snowshoeing, and even lived in an RV for 3 months. We weren’t good at everything we did, and there was definitely a lot of fear we had to conquer. But we’ve found that new experiences are always exciting to share and create memories we’ll never forget.

When's the last time you tried something new? + Common things that hold you back // localadventurer.com

What holds you back from new experiences? Here are a few excuses we’ve made:

I’m Scared

It’s amazing how much fear can still paralyze me. As we get older, I feel like the number of fears and the intensity of them continues to grow. If you can push past those fears, it’s an amazing feeling!

We both have a fear of heights, so last year, we made a conscious choice to try and overcome that fear by learning to boulder and rock climb. You should have seen me paralyzed on the wall at Smith Rock. I even still get scared at the bouldering gym with huge cushy mat to land on, but I’ve also noticed that I’ve been becoming more confident (think on a microscale).

5 Gallon Buckets Smith Rock Climbing // localadventurer.com

I Don’t Have Enough Time

This one is a killer! We all have limited time, and it’s really up to you to decide what’s important to you. I’ve found myself making excuses saying, ‘I only have an afternoon’ or ‘a week won’t be long enough’ or ‘I don’t have enough vacation days’. If you only have weekends or afternoons, look into exploring locally! We all have 52 weekends. Don’t take your city for granted.

The first couple years I worked a corporate job, I wasted my vacation days taking lazy days off at home. But by the third year, I used up every vacation day to take a trip either locally or abroad.

What if I Suck at it

We’re all a little prideful and it never feels great if you’re not good at something.

When we had the opportunity to live in an Airstream for 3 months, I was really intimidated with driving such a large vehicle. The hardest part was learning how to back up in it, and I still got embarrassed when others were watching. If I let that worry hold me back, I would have missed out on an amazing three months of RVing.

RV Life - the Good, Bad, and Ugly // localadventurer.com

I Hate Planning

Travel can take some work, but most of the time, it’s just an excuse to stay in your comfort zone and routine. If you’re a planner like Esther, you can do what she does and outsource to me! It’s not hard to find travel companions who don’t mind the planning process. On the flip side, if you’re more spontaneous, be prepared for the mishaps along the way but that can all be part of your adventure!

The first time we went snowshoeing, it happened on a whim! We took a spontaneous trip with a couple friends and drove into the mountains that recently had a huge snowfall. Neither of us had tried it, but we were excited to see how we would do. It was way harder than regular hiking but regardless of the how difficult it was, it took us to a winter wonderland we’ve never experienced before. We were surrounded by huge pine trees and it even snowed some more while we were there. We actually just ordered some of our own snowshoes now that we’re in the PNW so we can go out and explore on our own too!

Yosemite Winter - Snowshoeing at Badger Pass.

I Can’t Afford it.

Travel isn’t cheap, but we are all about collecting memories and not things. Plus, nowadays there are so many ways to travel. First off, we always believe that if it’s something you love and want to do, you can make a place for it in your budget. We don’t buy things for the house or clothes for ourselves. We stopped drinking out or having a coffee every day so that we can save for travel.

We also always travel within our means. Camping or day trips don’t cost as much money and time. Other times, we like to treat ourselves to luxury hotels and spa days. Either way, you can always find something new to try!

So what is holding you back from exploring new places and trying new experiences? Fear? Laziness? Money?

Don’t deprive yourself of going on a new adventure whether it’s near or far! If you’re looking for some inspiration, check out This is What Epic Looks Like. This is an amazing resource to help inspire you to try something new but also to help you make that dream a reality. During this amazing winter season, they have activities and recommendations for anyone and everyone. There are 8 world-class resorts where you can plan a vacation and experience something new. If you’re into winter sports, it’s easy to see why these places are amazing. If not, they still have plenty do, eat, and experience with your friends and family. You can find something that fits everyone’s interest. When you’re ready to book, they even have a list of great places to stay.

Vail Colorado - When's the last time you tried something new? + Common things that hold you back // localadventurer.com

We personally would love to visit Vail Colorado! It’s always been a premiere destination, and just the thought of skiing or snowboarding down fresh powder sounds amazing. We both aren’t great at it, but you can only get better if you go! We can soak in a hot tub or eat out at a nice restaurant when we get tired. How awesome does that sound?

So what’s next for you? We’d love to hear what is something new you want to try and why you haven’t done it yet. Are there other excuses we didn’t list here, and do you have any advice on how to get past those excuses? Let’s all try something new this year!

When we planned our weekend getaway to Astoria, OR, we wanted to find the perfect place to call home base. We were recommended the Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa, which has become an iconic spot in Astoria. Not only was it the perfect location, but our experience there completely exceeded our expectations. Here’s why we think you should stay here too!

9 Reasons to Stay at the Cannery Pier Hotel Astoria Oregon // localadventurer.com

1. Location

Location is always important. The Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa is located right on the river. The riverwalk is one of the big attractions in Astoria, and it goes right by the hotel! You can also take a short stroll or get a ride to downtown and bunch of restaurants.

2. The bridge and river views

This one is the most obvious. You can conveniently leave your windows open all day and night to enjoy the view of the river and the famous Astoria-Megler Bridge. You get even more great views from the lobby and around the hotel.

Can you believe this was right outside our window? The rainbow was the cherry on top!

3. Wine & Cheese reception

Every evening from 5-6PM they have wine, cheese, and lox complimentary for guests. The wine is all local and if you don’t drink, they have delicious sparkling cider from France too. It’s hard to say no to wine, but some nights we just opted for the cider because it was just that good.

4. Rooms were nice and comfortable with a fireplace

Each of the rooms are comfortable and cozy. What’s even better is the fireplace that you can start up anytime you want. At the end of wine and cheese hour, we brought an extra refill of wine to the room to cozy up next to the fire.

5. History

The hotel is built right on top of the 100-year old pilings that previously supported the Union Fisherman’s Coop Packing Company that was there. The history is also in the details of the hotel – just ask any of the staff to point some out. You can also stroll through their small museum on the second floor that talks about the importance of fishing in the area.

6. Vintage cars to drive you into town

Whether or not you love cars, the Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa offers an amazing service. They have two vintage cars that will take you to and from restaurants in Astoria. All you have to do is make a reservation at the front desk – be sure to make it early.

The hotel offers full spa services, but they also have a hot tub and authentic Finnish sauna that is complimentary for guests to use. We took advantage of this each night after being out in the cold.

When we visited Vietnam, Halong Bay was on our short list. We’ve seen beautiful photos of the bay and couldn’t wait to take our own. Rather than taking a day cruise into the bay, we decided to spend a night on the water. Though we didn’t get sunny weather and the vibrant green colors of the water, the ethereal fog made us feel like we were floating into an Asian silk painting.

The Golden Cruise Halong Bay

We took the Golden Cruise, which was the nicest option and was booked for us by a family friend. Although the ship isn’t huge (capacity of 100 people), as we made our way out on the water, it became really obvious that it was the nicest and largest boat in Halong Bay. Looking around, the other boats looked tiny!

Our 5 Star Luxury Golden Cruise Halong Bay Vietnam // localadventurer.comOur 5 Star Luxury Golden Cruise Halong Bay Vietnam // localadventurer.com

The Good and the Bad

Halong Bay is more about the views for us than anything else. The Golden Cruise is considered a 5-star luxury cruise in Vietnam, but it’s a 3 star at best for first world standards. It reminded me of a smaller Carnival cruise except everything was clad in gold. We were happy that the rooms were spacious, comfortable, and clean, and that the staff was friendly. We also had an amazing view from our balcony and spent most of our time looking out at the layers of mountains.

Besides that, the meals were just okay, and they had some activities during the downtime. The chef taught a class on how to make spring rolls, and we learned that in Vietnam they don’t normally tuck in the ends. Is the US the only place that does that?

The one big complaint is that you have to clean up and check out before you arrive back on land. Because they are bringing on a new boat full of guests as soon as we get back, they have us waiting in the dining room on the long ride home.

Squid Fishing

During dinner, they mentioned squid fishing, which grabbed Jacob’s attention even though no one else on the boat seemed interested. The crew member seemed surprised when we asked about it and pointed us towards the back of the boat. We made our way walking by the kitchen and staff quarters and were met by their resident expert. She untangled the rods, which were basically bamboo rods with some line on the end, and then handed one to each of us. As we proceeded to drop the line in, she showed us how to move the bait to entice the squid. They stay near the surfac, and we saw one or two pass by. Unfortunately, that night we left empty handed, but apparently, there were a ton the week before! Always up to the animals.

We wouldn’t have minded getting to kayak out on the water, so next time we’re back in Vietnam, we’d probably do a 2 night cruise.

  • Cruise out to Halong Bay (“Descending Dragon” Bay)

  • Light lunch at Cua Vang Restaurant.

WHAT TO PACK

  • Sea-Bands and Dramamine in case you get sea sick.
  • Layers – depending on the weather, it can get cold and windy while out on the water.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

  • Bring a wide lens for landscapes and
  • Long lens for the monkeys (we use this one).

If you’re planning a trip, you can check out the boat cruise we took here. Keep in mind, you are at the mercy of the weather, so the more time you’re out there, the better chances you have to capture the photos and get the weather you want!

Have you been to Vietnam? What are your favorite spots? Do you have a Southeast Asia trip you’re hoping to do in the future?
