Before we get into it, we want to remind everyone to explore the parks responsibly using the 7 Leave No Trace Principles. Have a plan, stay on established trails, carry out anything you carry in, leave what you find, minimize campfire impact, respect wildlife, and be considerate of others.

TLDR

🗓 Why May? – May is an ideal time to visit national parks in the USA because the weather is generally mild and great for outdoor activities. Many parks are less crowded compared to peak summer months, allowing for a more peaceful experience while still offering access to hiking, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives.

About the National Park by Month Series

To put together this list, we’ve combined our personal experiences and tips we gathered from locals and cross-referenced them with the weather, accessibility, local forums, seasonal attractions like fall foliage or wildflowers, and special events happening in the area. We also considered any unique adventures only offered at certain times of the year to find the most optimal months to visit each National Park. Phew! That was a lot!

It took me a whole week of research, but since I’m a maximizer, it was completely worth having a year-round calendar of adventures (publishing that soon!). Also, check out our complete list of all the national parks and all national park units that include soon-to-be national parks.

We also chose not to include the hardest-to-access national parks in Alaska and the ones in U.S. territories in this series.

National Parks By Month: Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec

Is May a Good Time to Visit National Parks?

May is a great time to visit National Parks for a few reasons. The weather is generally mild in most regions making it great for outdoor activities. It also marks the beginning of Spring in many parks so the flowers are blooming. For wildlife, animals begin emerging from winter hibernation or start preparing for mating season so they are active. Lastly, the crowds are typically smaller than summer crowds.

Plan on visiting more than two national parks this year? Pick up an America the Beautiful annual pass to save money (entrance fees to each park are, on average, $30-35 per vehicle). Plus, you are helping support the Parks that always need funding.

Tips for Visiting National Parks in May

  • Use the Leave No Trace principles. Have a plan, stay on established trails, carry out anything you carry in, leave what you find, minimize campfire impact, respect wildlife, and be considerate of others.
  • Pick up the National Park Annual Pass if you plan on visiting multiple parks within the year. It saves you a lot of money.
  • Want to see spring blooms? Climate change and droughts can make timing unpredictable. We typically scroll through Instagram or TikTok and look for non-influencers.
  • Packing layers is always a good idea when traveling. Some parks drastically change temperatures from day to night. Pay attention to the elevation change. A general rule is that it’s 5 degrees cooler for every 1000 ft elevation.
  • You may need a reservation. See national parks that now require reservations here.
  • Closures – Always check the park’s site and Visitors Center for the most up-to-date information on closures.
  • Remember that wildlife is wild. Be familiar with how to interact with animals and how much space you should have between you and them. Generally, you should stay 25 yards from most wildlife and 100 yards from predators, but each park has different rules.

Pack your binoculars and long lens because April is the perfect time for serious wildlife spotting. Bison are typically calving in April, and black bears start emerging from their dens. You have a much better chance of seeing these majestic animals with fewer crowds.

Local Tip: Be sure to check road closures before planning your trip. The park is still transitioning in April, so many accommodations and campgrounds aren’t open until mid-April.

Want to know which California flower fields to visit this spring? Here they are!

Every year I see people posting photos of spring blooms, I tell myself we’re going to go see them too. But every year, we plan too late, and they’ve already come and gone. I’m not much of a flower kind of girl (Jacob knows I will take nice food or booze over flowers any day), but there’s something I love about a whole field of flowers. If they were bugless, I could hang out in them all day.

This year has been the perfect storm for the superbloom in Southern California. Since I’m already obsessed with making daily lists for myself, I decided the best way to get myself to go is to come up with a list of places I want to go see them.

Timing is key with the superbloom, and the low desert is already seeing blooms right now (early March). It’s predicted to last in the high desert until June. Don’t miss your chance to see them!

Essential Tips for Visiting and Photographing the Super Bloom

  • Photo Tip – There are ways to photograph yourself “in” the flowers without going off trail. Shoot with a long lens and at a low vantage point. That will bring the distance between the flowers and you closer together and hide the trails.
  • Go ASAP when you see people post about the super bloom. We saw entire fields disappear in a few days because caterpillars ate them. Did you know they eat 200 times their weight in flowers and leaves?
  • Please respect the flowers so that others can enjoy them too, but respect people too. There’s a growing resentment for people visiting these California flower fields and trampling on the wildflowers. This also upsets us, but we’ve found that kindly educating people is better than shaming them. Since when did flowers become more important than humans?
  • See wildflower updates on Desert USAOther sites haven’t been as accurate and left us disappointed. Pay attention to posting dates and visitation dates since they may differ. You can also see who’s posting recently on #superbloom. I usually look in the captions or ask when they visited since many of them could be latergrams.
  • Heavy Rain in the SouthWest will cause blooms to happen earlier than normal. It will also do some damage to the areas so pay attention to park closures.

Where to Stay to See California Flower Fields

Did You Miss the Spring Bloom Season in California?

If you miss the flowers in SoCal, head up to the PNW. The flowers bloom later there. Check out the best hikes to see Pacific Northwest Wildflowers.

I’ve always wondered by definition what qualifies as a wildflower (I mean… aside from the genetically modified ones… didn’t all flowers come from the wild?) Maybe you already know this, but in case you were wondering, I looked it up after all these years.

It’s simply a flower that grows without any care or nurturing. However, if you take that same flower and plant it in your garden, then it is no longer a wildflower if you intend to keep it alive longer than its natural lifespan. Where my florists/botanists at?

Have you been to any of these flower fields in California? Out of these places, where would you be most interested in visiting?

Looking for Cherry Blossoms in Portland? Here is everything you need to know.

Portland is an underrated destination for cherry blossoms. We didn’t realize until we moved there, how many cherry trees were planted throughout the city. Since cherry blossoms have such a short blooming period, it’s always exciting when we catch them at the right moment.

Timing is always the toughest part, but if you catch them at the right moment, it’s magical. Keep in mind the dates are rough estimates for when they bloom. They can bloom early or late depending on the weather, and the blooms can be short-lived with all the rain in Portland.

When and Where to See Cherry Blossoms in Portland Oregon

Here are the best spots to find cherry blossoms in Portland.

1. Japanese American Historical Plaza at Tom Mccall Waterfront Park

45.5239576,-122.6717726, map

When: Late March – Early April
Hours:  5 AM – 12 AM
Admission: FREE

If you only have time for one spot, this is the one to go to. We love how the cherry blossoms are lined up, so you can easily shoot between the rows for a tree tunnel effect. The 100 Akebono trees were donated by the Japanese Grain Importers Association back in 1990.

2. Hoyt Arboretum

4000 SW Fairview Blvd, Portland, OR 97221, map

When: Mid-April to May
Hours:  Daily 5 AM – 10 PM
Admission: FREE

Hoyt Arboretum has 60 late-blooming Shirofugen Cherry Blossoms. Besides the Shirofugen, you can also find Shogetsu Cherry Trees as well. Follow the path to where the Wildwood & Hawthorn Trails meet to find the best area to see the cherry blossoms and dogwoods. It’s also beautiful in the fall.

3. Laurelhurst Park

SE Cesar E Chavez Blvd & Stark St, Portland, OR 97214, map

Hours:  Daily 5AM – 10:30PM
Admission: FREE

We loved walking around this park when we lived in Portland. It’s a popular park amongst locals since it’s surrounded by neighborhoods. Across the street from the playground, you’ll find a variety of blooming flowers, including cherry blossoms and rhododendron.

4. Pittock Mansion →

5. Portland Japanese Garden

611 SW Kingston Ave, Portland, OR 97205, map

Hours:  Hours Change Throughout the Year
Admission: $19.95

Find a few cherry blossoms sprinkled among this beautiful garden. I was a bit disappointed because I expected to see more cherry blossoms and some were pre-bloom.

They pride themselves in being the most authentic Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan. What’s great about this spot is that even if you miss the cherry blossoms, it’s a beautiful place to explore year round. It also includes another decent view of the city.

Local Tip: Tripods are allowed for a fee unless you are a Garden Member.

When: Mid-April to May
Hours:  Daily 5 AM – Midnight

Mt Tabor offers some of the best views in the city, and also has some cherry blossoms sprinkled throughout the park. The best spot to look for them is along 60th ave just above the water reservoir. Did you know that Mt Tabor is an extinct volcano?

7. University of Portland

5000 N Willamette Blvd, Portland, OR 97203, map

When: Mid-April to May
Admission: FREE

We’ve seen people mention that there are Cherry Blossoms at the University of Portland as well. If you head towards the giant bell tower, you should be able to find them.

Other Spring Blooms in Portland

Don’t limit yourself to just the Cherry Blossoms. There are a bunch of other beautiful blooms in Portland.

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, Eastmoreland

When: April – May
Hours: 10 AM – 3:30 PM (Opens at 1 PM on Wednesdays)

This garden doesn’t have any cherry blossoms, but it’s still a great place to visit for spring blooms. Rhododendrons, which can look similar to cherry blossoms, and azaleas.

Lan Su Chinese Garden

Duniway Park Lilac Garden

SW 6th Ave & SW Sheridan St, Portland, OR 97201, map

Hours: Daily 10AM to Midnight
Admission: FREE

Not many people know about this park, but it’s a great spot if you love lilac. There are over 125 varieties! Parking is limited and strictly enforced.

When Do Cherry Blossoms Bloom in Portland

Catching Cherry Blossoms when they bloom can be tricky! In Portland, the blooming cycle typically happens in March and April, but any chance in weather can delay them by a few weeks.

On top of that, we’re always hoping to catch the peak bloom, which is when 70 percent of the flowers have opened up. You can enjoy the flowers 4-5 days before and after peak bloom, but if you’re lucky enough to catch it at its peak, it’s magical.

If you live in the area, start keeping an eye out for predictions. The most accurate ones are made 10-12 days out.

Essential Tips

  • Check out the latest blooms on their corresponding sites: Japanese GardenJapanese American Historical Plaza, & Hoyt Arboretum.
  • There is a free Washington Park Shuttle that will take you between the Rose Test Garden, Japanese garden, and Hoyt Arboretum.
  • Once the cherry blossoms start to bloom, visit as often as you can to ensure you don’t miss peak bloom.
  • If you’re going to a crowded area, bring a tripod. You can try layering photos and make sure no one is in each section of the photo.

Portland has many nicknames, and among them is “City of Roses” or “Rose City”. If you’re visiting, it may not be 100% clear why it’s called that, but after spending a year in Portland, you begin to see them in different corners of the city.

WHY IS PORTLAND CALLED THE CITY OF ROSES?

The general consensus is that a few different things happened in the early 1900s that caught on.

The first was in 1888 when the Episcopal Church held a convention in Portland. The attendees referred to the city as the City of Roses, which later caught on in 1905. Harry Lane, the mayor at the time, came up with the concept to have an ongoing festival dedicated to roses. Two years later, the first Portland Rose Festival happened.

Another story comes from a local business called Oregon Life Insurance Company, which is now Standard Insurance. Leo Samuel, who founded the company, loved growing roses outside his home. He would leave a pair of cutting shears so people could take one with them, which then inspired others to start growing roses at their homes and businesses.

Lastly, roses grow REALLY well in Portland. That’s the main reason why the city has an International Rose Test Garden, where new rose varieties are constantly sent here from different parts of the world to be evaluated.

In NYC during Cherry Blossom season? Here are the best spots to see them.

Out of all the cities, we’ve lived in, we enjoyed the cherry blossom season in NYC the most.

I’m not a flower person, but I’ve always loved cherry blossoms. Maybe it’s because of mono-no-aware, the Japanese concept of bittersweet appreciation of ephemeral beauty. It’s a beautiful reminder of how short life is and how we should appreciate each moment.

TLDR

🌸 Where to See Cherry Blossoms – Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Green-wood Cemetery, Central Park, Roosevelt Island, Madison Square Park.

🗓 Cherry Blossom Season – Cherry Blossom season typically is from late March to mid-April in NYC and peaks the first or second week of April. Timing can shift, though, depending on the year’s weather. When we lived in NYC, it peaked in early May.

5 Best Places to See Cherry Blossoms in NYC

1. Brooklyn Botanic Garden

990 Washington Ave, Brooklyn 11225, map
Hours: Tues to Sun 10 AM to 6 PM | Admission: Adults $22

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has a lot of cherry blossom trees and multiple varieties. They also have 3 tree tunnels you can shoot down. Best of all, they have a Cherry Watch page where they update the current status of the trees.

The tunnels are lined with Kanzan (or Kwanzan) Cherry Blossoms, which bloom the latest of all the trees, so you can watch the map as the others bloom first. It took only a couple days for it to go from first bloom to full bloom.

Local Tip: Go on weekdays early mornings to avoid people. Also, the below photo isn’t a good representation of the crowds, but I stitched 30+ photos together to get a shot of me “alone”.

2. Green-Wood Cemetery

25th Street and Fifth Avenue Brooklyn, map
Hours: 8 AM to 5 PM October to March | Admission: FREE

You won’t find cherry blossom tree tunnels, but this historical cemetery has a wide variety of cherry blossoms scattered throughout its beautiful grounds. It was my favorite place to see them since it was so peaceful and serene. It only took us moments to spot them after entering and within a 10-minute walk, we found so many beautiful trees to shoot.

Local Tip: Only photos of the grounds and architecture are allowed. No models (including taking photos of other people) are allowed.

3. Central Park →

W 90th Street and Central Park West,map
Hours: All Day | Admission: FREE

Head to the west side of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir to find a bunch of cherry blossoms along Bridle Path. The Kwanzan Cherry Blossoms line the pathway for great photo opportunities. You’ll find lots of people enjoying a picnic under the trees on beautiful days.

Other places to find the Kwanzan Cherry Blossoms:

  • West Side of the Reservoir (Bridle Path is a great spot)
  • East Green
  • West of the MET
  • East Drive at 74th Street
  • Bethesda Terrace and Cherry Hill (mid-Park at 72nd Street)
  • Southeast Corner of the Great Lawn Oval

You can also find Yoshino Cherry in the park. These tend to bloom earlier than the Kwanzan Cherry. Here are the best places to see them:

  • Southeast Edge of Great Lawn
  • East Side of the Reservoir
  • Lilac Walk (northeast of Sheep Meadow)
  • Conservatory Water
  • Ramble (mid-Park at 72nd Street)
  • Delacorte Theater (mid-Park at 80th Street)

4. Roosevelt Island

W Main Street and N Loop Roadmap
Hours: All Day | Admission: FREE

Head south from the Roosevelt Island Tram station along the Manhattan side of the island to find a long row of cherry trees. You also get a great view of the city.

There are two types of cherry blossom trees along the promenade that bloom at different times, so you can visit multiple times to check them out.

Local Tip: They also have a free Cherry Blossom Festival on the Island every year in April. You can get here with the tram, the F, or the ferry. If you do the tram, it also has an additional great view of the city.

5. Madison Square Park + Flatiron Building

11 Madison Ave, map
Hours: All Day | Admission: FREE

Chances are if you’re visiting, you’ll be going to the Flatiron Building at some point. If you’re looking for a spot to check out cherry blossoms with a view of one of the most iconic buildings in the city, then this is the spot for you. There aren’t as many trees, but there are a few you can picnic under and enjoy the view of the Flatiron Building right next to it.

Local Tip: Bring a long lens for this shot. This was using the 70-200mm/2.8L.

Next to the Flatiron Building is Madison Square Park, which has a few cherry blossom trees that can perfectly frame this iconic building // Local Adventurer #nyc #newyork

Essential Local Tips + Photography Tips

  • The best light is generally during sunrise or sunset. Sunset is obviously more crowded.
  • The most beautiful time to see or photograph cherry blossoms is when there is a blanket of pink below, between the cusp of life and death. It’s extremely difficult to time. We basically missed it by one day.
  • Kanzen or Kwanzan cherries are the vibrant pink ones. Keep in mind Yoshino cherries bloom before Kwanzen. There wasn’t much overlap between the two here. After the Yoshino’s all fell were when the Kwanzen came out.
  • If you’re going to a crowded area, bring a tripod. You can try layering photos and make sure no one is in each section of the photo. I had to layer 30+ photos together for the one below.

Portland has many nicknames, and one we commonly hear about is “City of Roses” or “Rose City”. The climate makes it the ideal spot to grow roses outdoors. Although you can see roses scattered throughout the city, one of the best places to see them is the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park.

Portland Oregon is commonly called the City of Roses. You can see roses scattered throughout the city, but if you’re a visitor, this is the best place to see roses of all varieties. Click through to see more photos and tips for your visit to the International Rose Test Garden. // Local Adventurer #pdx #portland #pnw

ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL ROSE TEST GARDEN

The free rose garden is home to over 8,000 rose plants and roughly 550 different varieties. It’s one of eleven American Garden Rose Selections test sites, and the oldest continuously operated public rose test garden in the United States! The garden covers 4.5 acres of land with several tiers to explore.

New roses are sent to the garden from all over the world to be evaluated before going to market (although a lot of the roses in the garden are already sold to the public). They look at everything from disease resistance to color and fragrance.

BEST TIME TO GO

The roses bloom anytime between April and October, but the peak usually comes sometime in June. We visited a few times starting in May and the roses definitely weren’t in full bloom yet.

Since the site isn’t updated with the current bloom status, we found that the best way to see what the current bloom was by stalking the Instagram location tag. Just be sure to you look through plenty of the latest photos in case people are posting late or from previous trips.

NAVIGATING THE INTERNATIONAL ROSE TEST GARDEN

We simply strolled through the gardens looking for photo opportunities, but if you want to search for specific roses, look for the most up-to-date map listing on the premises. A couple notable areas:

  • The Royal Rosarian Garden has roses that are no longer commercially sold.
  • The Shakespeare Garden contains roses features in his writing and also other summer annuals, tropical plants, and year-round shrubs names after characters in his plays.
  • The Minature Rose Garden is one of only eight miniature rose testing grounds for the American Rose Society and helps determine which go to market.
  • The center aisle of the middle garden features the winners of the national annual American Rose Society.

FREE TOURS

If you want to get more insight of the garden, free tours are offered to the public daily at 1 PM from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. To be a part of the tour, meet at the Rose Garden store at before 12:50 PM.

PARKING & DIRECTIONS

International Rose Test Garden

Spring is the perfect time to visit Oregon, especially when the tulips are in bloom. I’ve always wanted to visit the Skagit Tulip Festival in Washington, but after visiting the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, I personally think Mount Hood makes a better backdrop (fingers crossed you go on a clear day). The colorful rows of tulips are beautiful and Hood looks majestic, which makes for amazing photos. It’s any photographer’s dream.

When we lived in Portland, we visited the 40 acre Tulip farm twice. Both times were well worth the 40-minute drive.

Best Time to Visit

The 2023 Season runs from March 17–April 30 and daily from 9 am to 6 pm (8-7 on weekends). Each year, the exact dates will differ a bit but will generally be around the same time.

As you can imagine, the weekends are much busier than during the week, so if you want to avoid the crowds or if you’re going to shoot photos, you should absolutely try to go during the week. The first time we went, it was for sunrise on a Saturday, and I was surprised by the crowd of photographers dedicated enough to wake up for it. It makes sense, though, since the peak bloom has such a limited time frame and it’s so weather dependent.

The advantage of going during the weekend is that there are more activities available, which is great for families who want to make a full day out of their trip.

About the farm

The farm was started in 1950 by Ross and Dorothy Iverson, who continued to expand the farm as they put their six kids through college. In the late 1970s, they bought a few acres of tulip bulbs from Dr. Homan, who was retiring, and by the early 1980’s, they had over 15 acres.

They started the Wooden Shoe Bulb Company, which took off in 1985 when they opened their fields for Easter weekend. In 2001, they changed their name to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, and currently, it is a popular destination to visit in Oregon.

Buying and Keeping Fresh Cut Flowers

Tulips can stay in bloom for over 8 weeks, starting as early as late February and until late April. Most of them start at the end of March. They pick flowers by hand, wash them, and wrap them in clear cello to protect them. They are then stored in cold storage (33°F) in water. You can purchase fresh cut flowers onsite at the Gift Shop from March to April (special dates vary depending on n weather). You can also have them shipped to you.

Once you purchase them, keep in mind that tulips can last up to 8 hours without water. They will take 1-3 days to open. I wanted to come home with some, but we didn’t get any because tulips are poisonous to cats and dogs, and we have a hard time keeping them out of their reach.

Essential Tips for GOing to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival

  • The best way to find out the current status of the Tulip Fields is to check out the current Field Report. They give an update on what’s happening and include photos.
  • During sunrise, expect there to be a lot of photographers out, but the farm is big and there are still plenty of places to shoot from.
  • Be mindful of the flowers. They spend a lot of time growing them for everyone to enjoy, and it’s sad to see when they get trampled.
  • They hold special events throughout the season, like photography classes, 5K/10K runs, and more. Find details here.
  • Well behaved dogs are allowed on leashes.

What to Pack

  • Rain Gear – The Pacific Northwest gets a LOT of rain, which means, during your visit it’s likely to be really muddy. Be prepared with the proper footwear (the mud gets slippery) and clothes you don’t mind getting muddy.
  • Backpack you can easily access without having to put it down since the ground gets muddy.
  • Tripod if you want to shoot during sunrise or sunset.
  • All of our photos are shot with the Canon 5D Mark III + 70-200mm lens. You can bring a wider lens as well, but we like a longer lens to compress the photo.

This was the beginning of a streak of hikes which we underestimated. It’s a funny thing how your mind can destroy your body. Though we were huffing and puffing the entire way, once we reached the opening near the top, we saw what all that work had been for. The hills were alive and in full bloom, and there was no end in sight of yellow Balsamroots.

DOG MOUNTAIN HIKE
Distance: 6.9 miles
Elevation Gain: 2800 feet
Difficulty: Difficult
Seasons: Spring-Fall, Blooms Best During Late May to Early June
Trailhead Coordinates: 45.6992035,-121.7101786

Dog Mountain is a really popular hike, especially in the spring when the top of the mountain is covered in flowers. It’s easily accessible (especially from Portland Oregon) and the trail is well maintained. Don’t let its popularity fool you though! This is very steep hike which means you’ll have to take it slow or be in really good shape.

DIRECTIONS FOR DOG MOUNTAIN HIKE

From the Dog Mountain Trailhead (to the east side of the parking lot), hike up through the woods for about 0.7 miles to a junction. You will pass a primitive bathroom on the way up, which will be the only bathroom available on this trail.

NOTE: There is A LOT of poison oak in the lower section so stay on the trail.

At this junction, there will be a post that doesn’t have anything clearly visible on it. If you go left from here, it is the older version of the trail that is more difficult. Most people say it’s not worth it and stay to the right for the less difficult trail. Follow it up 1.2 miles to the lower viewpoint. This first viewpoint will give you a great view of the gorge and the first glimpse of the wildflowers. Take a break if needed, then continue up the trail to the summit.

After another half mile, you’ll come to another junction where the old trail meets the new one. Take the right path to continue upwards. The trail gets even steeper at this point, but you’ll start seeing the summit meadows through the trees. Eventually, you’ll come out of the woods and if you’re there at the right time, you’ll be greeted with endless yellow Balsamroot flowers. We definitely didn’t expect that many, since other wildflower hikes in the area only had patches here and there.

At the top, there is a lookout on the Oregon side, then the main trail continues up to the summit. You will reach another signed junction but continue right up to the top. There you’ll find a nice area to sit and enjoy the views. It will most likely have a bunch of other people there resting and picnicking.

When you’re ready to head down, you can decide to take the easy or more difficult way on the way down until you’re back at the parking lot.

PRO TIPS FOR YOUR HIKE

  • Spring Blooms: You will see mostly Northwest Balsamroot with some Columbia Gorge Lupine, Harsh Paintbrush, Spring Gold, and others mixed in. It’s generally best to go during late May or early June. The window only lasts a couple weeks. We went during the last week of May and it was perfect. Remember, though, that the bloom can change every year. Otherwise, it’s a pretty boring hike in comparison to the many other Columbia River Gorge hikes.
  • Respecting the Flowers: We’re not going to tell you what to do, but it’s courteous not to pick the flowers or to trample them so that future hikers can also appreciate them. Try your best to stay on established trails or if you go off trail, step on durable surfaces like rock, dry grass, or snow. Plus, there’s a lot of poison oak in the lower section, so you might want to think twice before you go off trail.
  • Parking: The parking area fills up early! Try arriving before 8AM or after 5PM between March and October. We arrived at 7AM and had no issues.
  • Bathrooms: There is a primitive bathroom just up the hill from the parking lot. During our visit, it looked clean and there was toilet paper. Not sure what it’s like after it gets really crowded later in the summer.
  • Want a Longer Hike? You can lengthen the hike to 7.4 miles by connecting with the Augspurger Trail. You can also continue to Augspurger Mountain from this area.

Looking for wildflowers in the PNW? Don’t miss these hikes.

Summer in the PNW is something to get really excited about. After all the doom and gloom, the sun starts peeking out, the wildflowers bloom, and it’s no longer dark around 4 pm! The season is glorious and we’ve been trying to spend as much time outside and soak in as much sun as possible.

A couple of weeks ago, we hit the trails in search of some wildflowers! We usually have the worst luck with timing, and made it to certain spots a day or two late, but we still managed to find some. Since wildflower season comes later in the PNW, we started anticipating it after seeing our friends post about Cali’s superbloom. We were determined not to miss it this year. After a long, strenuous hike, we were met with an endless field of beautiful yellow flowers!

Best Wildflower Hikes in the Pacific Northwest

As we shared on our last Bota Box adventure to Samuel H. Boardman State Park, we’re partnering with them to go explore the outdoors.

Whenever possible, we love bringing our Bota Box wines on our adventures! It’s nice getting to relax at the top of a peak or overlook while having a bite to eat and drinking our Bota Minis. The Bota Minis’ compact packaging makes them perfect for easy to moderate hikes (for strenuous ones, I recommend just water. These are our favorite travel water bottles).

They fit right into the compartments in my camera bag, and since they are resealable, we don’t ever worry about glasses, corkscrews, or finishing them in one sitting. If you’re camping, you can bring the original Bota Boxes that are equivalent to 4 bottles of wine per box. We loved having those on our climbing trips to Joshua Tree.

As Local Adventurers, we always believe that we should never take our weekends or backyard for granted! There’s always an adventure to be found. To help you get inspired, here’s a list of awesome wildflower spots in the PNW.

Pro Tips for Hiking to Pacific Northwest Wildflowers

  • Keep in mind that the blooming season varies every year. Use the best times to visit as a general guideline, but check the wildflower reports before you go.
  • Be respectful of wildflowers and help preserve them for others to enjoy. Don’t pick or trample through meadows. Stick to trails, try to stand on rocks or packed down dirt, rather than plant life.
  • Know your plants! There are some areas that have a lot of poison oak mixed amongst the wildflowers. “Leaves of three, let them be” might help you remember what to avoid.
