Today, we’ve put together a list of the best free things to do in Charleston SC to help you stay on budget for your next trip.

Aside from our hometown Atlanta, Charleston is my next favorite city in the South! We try to visit at least once a year since there’s always something new for us to see, do, and learn.

The city is overflowing with history and the best part is many attractions are free to experience.

1. Rainbow Row

83 E Bay St, Charleston, SC 29401, map

Rainbow Row, near the Battery, is a delightful cluster of 14 historic, pastel-colored homes. This is the main Instagram photo when you’re in Charleston.

My personal favorite home is Number 87. A fire destroyed it and the owners rebuilt it in 1792. The house was then purchased in the 1920s and is now a home painted a sunny yellow. It’s the most notable house of Rainbow Row.

Photo Tip: There are cars parked along the facade at all times during the day, making it difficult for great photos. Sunrise will be your best chance.

Rainbow Row Charleston SC

2. The Battery

2 Murray Blvd, Charleston, SC 29401, map

The Battery was first built as a defensive seawall, but today, it’s famous for the beautiful antebellum homes lined along the peninsula.

I love strolling through the neighborhood and reading plaques on the homes. These plaques provide a brief historical description of the house and allow you to imagine what Antebellum living was like.

Take a walk by the seawall while admiring the sunset, and you can even spot dolphins!

Pro Tip: There are no public bathrooms in this area, so make sure you make a pit stop before heading over.

The Battery Charleston South Carolina

2 Murray Blvd, Charleston, SC 29401, map

This beautiful park is located right by The Battery. You can marvel at several Civil War canons and monuments throughout the park.

Look for the Pirate Monument, my favorite structure in White Point Garden (and a local favorite too). It tells a really interesting story about the Confederate Pirates.

Local Tip: There’s free street parking along the park and are most available in the afternoon.

White Point Garden Charleston

4. Angel Oak Tree

3688 Angel Oak Rd, Johns Island, SC 29455, map

Angel Oak is a live oak tree believed to be over 400 years old. It’s worth the drive to Johns Island. It stands at an impressive 66.5 ft tall and measures 28 ft in circumference.

Because it survived through many wars and hurricanes, locals call it a spiritual treasure. The park grounds surrounding the tree are also free to visit.

Pro Tip: Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the views. That’s what we did!

Angel Oak Tree SC

5. Old City Market

188 Meeting St, Charleston, SC 29401, map

We always stop at the Old City Market to pick up gifts for our friends and family. The market stretches over four city blocks and is filled with goodies from handmade sweetgrass baskets to country grits.

Even if you’re not buying anything, it’s a cool spot to check out for its history.

Local Tip: There are public restrooms located in the middle section of the market by the Food Hall.

Charleston Old City Market

6. Pineapple Fountain and Waterfront Park

1 Vendue Range, Charleston, SC 29401, map

Located along the Cooper River, Waterfront Park boasts a wooden pier and covered swings. Stop by to enjoy some live music or take a photo at the famous Pineapple Fountain, an Instagram favorite!

Local Tip: The parking spots on the street are metered but are free before 9 AM, after 6 PM, and all day Sunday.

The Pineapple Fountain at Waterfront Park

7. Charles Pinckney National Historic Site

1254 Long Point Rd., Mount Pleasant, SC 29464, map

This is one of our favorite hidden gems located right outside of Charleston.

See how Charles Pinckney helped shaped the United States, discover the importance of Mount Pleasant and Charleston during the 1700s, and hear stories of enslaved African Americans in South Carolina. You can tour the house and watch an informative video for free.

8. Battery Carriage House Inn

20 S Battery, Charleston, SC 29401, map

Locals dubbed this as Charleston’s Most Haunted Inn. There have been a ton of ghost sightings, which you can read about here. The public is welcome to walk the grounds and gardens for free.

Local Tip: Make sure you catch the plaque at the entrance that marks the water level and flood damage made by Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

Battery Carriage House Inn

9. KING STREET

King Street, Charleston, SC 29401, map
King Street is more than 300 years old and is the second most significant street in downtown Charleston. You can peruse through its long path of designer brand retailers as well as antique stores and local shops.

Note: The street is broken into the following: Lower King Street Antiques District, Middle King Street Fashion District, and Upper King Street Design and Dining District.

King Street Charleston SC

10. Magnolia Cemetery

70 Cunnington Ave., Charleston, SC 29405, map

Magnolia Cemetery is one of America’s most beautiful and historic cemeteries and is most famous for the graves of the Hunley crew. These men operated the world’s first submarine, H.L. Hunley, which served in the American Civil War and was the first combat submarine to sink a warship.

If you enjoy visiting cemeteries for their historical purposes, Magnolia Cemetery is one of the top free things to do in Charleston.

Local Tip: Keep an eye out for alligators.

11. Circular Church Graveyard

150 Meeting St, Charleston, SC 29401, map

This graveyard is one of the oldest English burial ground in existence in Charleston. Visitors can stroll through the grounds for free and take a look at the 500+ remaining gravestones that attest to cultural past.

Stop by the largest burial monument, the Hutson-Peronneau vault, which is believed to contain 18 people.

Circular Church Graveyard + 25 Best Free Things to Do in Charleston SC

12. Gateway Walk

Archdale St, Charleston, SC 29401, map

A free, leisurely walk through gardens and graveyards in the city, starting at Archdale Street. We grabbed a map from our hotel concierge, but you can also find it here.

It’s a great way to see landscaped gardens and hidden architecture between city blocks.

Pro Tip: Some parts are overgrown with shrubbery, so be sure to wear closed-toe shoes.

13. WALKING TOUR OF CHARLESTON

107 Ashley Ave, Charleston, SC 29401, map

Most tours in Charleston cost money, but Free Tours by Foot is a name-your-own-price (or free) concept. Take a Civil War day tour or a ghost tour in the evening, all of which are free. Licensed and professional tour guides lead the tours.

Pro Tip: If you’re on a trip with a larger group, we recommend booking a private tour (not free).

14. Charleston Tea Plantation

6617 Maybank Hwy, Wadmalaw Island, SC 29487, map

Did you know that Charleston is home to America’s only tea factory? You can visit the grounds and take a complimentary factory tour.

Pro Tip: Go on a weekday when the factory is running.

Charleston Tea Plantation + 25 Amazing Free Things to Do in Charleston SC

15. Best Friend of Charleston

23 Ann St, Charleston, SC 29403, map

The Best Friend is the first locomotive built entirely in the United States for the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company. You can check out the replica at the museum for free. It’s a great stop for kids and train buffs!

Local Tip: It’s located behind the Visitor Center and has accessible parking adjacent to the building.

16. Folly Beach

101 E Arctic Ave, Folly Beach, SC 29439, map

Folly Beach is a great beach year-round to walk along the pier and relax by the waves. There are also several eateries and shopping within the community.

The beach is free, but parking is not. There are some cash parking locations, where you can use the parking app to pay.

Pro Tip: Parking is a bit pricey, hovering around $15, and it’s not always easily accessible. If you’re staying near the beach, we recommend grabbing a Lyft or Uber.
Folly Beach Pier

17. Hampton Park

30 Mary Murray Dr, Charleston, SC 29403, map

Hampton Park is the largest public park on the peninsula and a great place for a run with your dog or a bike ride. We recommend packing a picnic and enjoying it on the green lawns near the fountain and ponds.

Note: There are tons of geese and ducks year-round, so watch your step.

18. Charleston City Hall

80 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401, map

The building itself is already impressive, but the amazing portrait of President George Washington, c. 1791 makes stopping at City Hall even more worthwhile. There’s a guide on-site to answer any questions.

Pro Tip: The restrooms here are the closest ones to the Battery.

Charleston City Hall

19. The Citadel

171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409, map

Head to the historic military college of South Carolina to see the beautiful architecture and explore the grounds for free. You can also catch a Citadel Dress Parade led by the cadets on Fridays. See the parade schedule here.

Pro Tip: We called ahead and scheduled a free tour of the campus led by a cadet.

20. Arthur Ravenel Bridge

Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge, Charleston, SC 29403, map

The Arthur Ravenel Bridge is hard to miss. Whether you drive on it or take the walking path, this 2.5-mile-long bridge offers a beautiful view of the water and the city.

Watch the ships pass under and catch the sunset. There’s also a children’s park with a large free parking area, conveniently shaded by the bridge and located right by the pier.

Photo Tip: One of the best spots to photograph the bridge is from Patriot’s Point on Sullivan’s Island.

Arthur Ravenel Bridge

21. Pitt Street Bridge

Pitt Street, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29401, map

We loved kayaking through the Charleston Harbor and catching the sunset from the bridge.

The Pitt Street Bridge has deep roots in Mount Pleasant’s Old Village. The original trolley bridge was built in 1898 and linked Old Village to Sullivan’s Island.

Pro Tip: Bring your fishing gear. It’s a popular spot for fishing and catching blue crabs.

22. Morris Island Lighthouse

1750 E Ashley Ave, Folly Beach, SC 29439, map

This 1876 lighthouse is no longer functional and is closed to the public, but you can get a great view of it from the beach. It’s a local favorite spot for a photo op.

Pro Tip: We loved our view from the end of Ashley Ave on Folly Beach.

Morris Island Lighthouse + 25 Best Free Things to Do in Charleston SC

23. Charleston Carriage Ride Barns

8 Guignard St, Charleston, SC 29401, map

The carriage rides aren’t free, but we highly recommend stopping by the barn where you can see the horses and mules. Kids will love it, and if you ask nicely, they might let you pet one.

Pro Tip: We toured with the Old South Carriage Company, and they offer a free barn tour after your carriage ride.

24. Marion Square

329 Meeting St, Charleston, SC 29403, map
We stopped at Marion Square to rest our feet after visiting Rainbow Row and the Battery. It’s a large green space where you can enjoy the fountain and historic monuments.

Pro Tip: There is a Farmers Market on Saturday mornings with lots of artisanal food, local fruits, vegetables, and arts and crafts.

Marion Square Charleston

25. St Philips Church

142 Church StCharleston, SC 29401-2898map

Charleston is also known as the “Holy City” and has several church steeples towering over the skyline.

St. Philip’s steeple is one of the most recognizable and is the oldest European-American religious congregation in South Carolina. Tour the church and the cemetery grounds for free. Donations are appreciated.

Pro Tip: Be sure to stop by Charles Pinckney’s grave in St. Philip’s cemetery.

Visiting Greenville? Don’t miss these amazing spots to eat.

We’ve driven by Greenville several times but never felt like we had a reason to stop. But after our recent visit checking out the best places to eat in Greenville SC, we’ll definitely make it a point to swing by in the future.

It’s a short, two-hour drive from our home base in Atlanta and an easy getaway from the craziness that is ‘The A’ these days. Needless to say, we’ll be coming back after our fun food-filled weekend!

TLDR

📍 Location – Greenville, South Carolina, is in the northwestern part of the state roughly 100 miles southwest of Charlotte, NC, and 150 miles northeast of Atlanta, GA. The city is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

🍽 Where to Eat – The Trappe Door, TakoSushi, The Lazy Goat

13 Absolutely Amazing Places to Eat in Greenville SC

During our time in Greenville, we had a chance to stay at Hilton Garden Inn. When we weren’t adventuring through town, it was the perfect home base for foodies like us. We also explored the Fall for Greenville Festival and a couple of local breweries.

1. The Trappe Door

23 W Washington St, Greenville, SC 29601, map

A few of our friends recommended this Belgian joint, so we were really excited to see their booth at Fall for Greenville.

We ordered a bowl of Mussels Mariniera, a local favorite, and I honestly could have used up all of my food tickets just for these mussels. The white wine sauce was piping hot, briny and brothy, with the right amount of garlicky kick.

Local Tip: Grab a Belgian brew to pair with your meal. We’ve heard good things.

2. Smoky Dreams BBQ

3620 Pelham Rd, Greenville, SC 29615, map

Freshest meats with original homemade seasonings and sauces. Don’t skimp out on dessert! Locals love their peanut butter pie and lemon cream pie.

3. Thomas Creek Brewery

2054 Piedmont Hwy, Greenville, SC 29605, map

Thomas Creek Brewery pumps out some of the best beers I’ve ever tasted. They’re the first craft beer brewery in South Carolina and have been around for over two decades.

Hilton Garden Inn has a number of their beers on tap, and we loved the great variety of crisp brews, both seasonal and time-honored craft options. There’s also a nice food menu, but we didn’t get to partake. We’ll definitely have to come back!

Local Tip: Take the brewery tour. It only costs $5 and you get a sampling of four great beers.

Thomas Creek Brewery + 13 Incredible Places to Eat in Greenville SC

4. Yee-Haw Brewery

307 E McBee Ave, Greenville, SC 29601, map

Yee-Haw Brewery originated in Johnson City, Tenn. But, Greenvillians still consider this outpost a local hangout.

Sip through an array of beers, from a sharp Kolsch to a hoppy Dunkel. The unique names (e.g., Flirtin’ with Disaster, The Mowtivator, and Blackberry Beret) will make you want to order all of them. It’s a great spot to watch the game and enjoy late-night munchies.

Local Tip: They also have an extensive food menu. Order the beer cheese and soft pretzels. I could’ve eaten a whole plate myself.

5. The Lost Cajun

3612 Pelham Rd, Greenville, SC 29615, map

We didn’t try anything savory from The Lost Cajun, but picked up their pillowy, sugar-coated beignets. There’s a 100% chance we would eat 100 more of these next time we’re back.

Local Tip: My favorite is the gumbo sampler. I always recommend it to out-of-town visitors. – Tyler, Local Student

6. Clare’s Creamery

1635 E North St, Greenville, SC 29607map

You all know that Josh never skips out on dessert, especially if it’s gelato or ice cream. The photo below is from Luna Rosa Gelato smack dab in the middle of Main Street downtown, but they’ve closed since our visit.

Clare’s Creamery is a spot we’ve put on our list to visit next time we’re in town. Has anyone been?

Luna Rosa Greenville SC

7. Hilton Garden Inn

108 Carolina Point Pkwy, Greenville, SC 29607, map

We had a fantastic time at the Hilton Garden Inn in Greenville. We’ve stayed at Hilton Garden Inn hotels before and have always had a wonderful experience.

Josh loved the breakfast buffet in the mornings, and I liked The Shop, a 24-hour grab-and-go retail shop where you can get snacks and drinks at any time of day.

We enjoyed a fun happy hour and sit-down dinner, where the hotel team showcased core Hilton Garden Inn menu items, served with a Greenville twist. All of these dishes showcased Hilton Garden Inn Greenville’s customized menu and locally sourced ingredients that reflected Southern flavors.

First, we tried a new specialty cocktail, created by actress Judy Greer, which is available on Hilton Garden Inn menus nationwide.

A fresh twist on the classic Daisy, Judy’s Garden Gin is simple, delicate, yet bursting with flavor. It combines gin, lemon juice, Chambord, and a touch of simple syrup. I loved the pretty pink color, and it was light enough for a pre-dinner drink.

Then we moved onto dinner. I particularly liked the Citrus Salmon Bowl. Picture grilled salmon atop a healthy blend of quinoa, wild rice, and barley, all of which are melded with fire-roasted peppers and a smoky yogurt that adds a subtle tang.

Josh savored the Sticky Finger Ribs with a local whiskey-soy BBQ sauce that was flavorful and chock-full of herbs.

Of course, we never skimp out on dessert. We indulged on a nationwide guest favorite, the Mason Jar Chocolate Fudge Cake. It was the definition of indulgent.

The Sous Vide Butter Pecan Creme Brûlée was luscious and smooth. I liked that the butter pecan flavor wasn’t too overwhelming. There’s something very satisfying about cracking into the caramelized sugar top.

8. Spill the Beans

531 S Main St, Greenville, SC 29601, map

I’m always on the hunt for the best local coffee shop and Spill the Beans did not disappoint. The cafe is cozy and filled with the sweet smell of homemade waffle cones (yes, they also serve ice cream!).

We tried one of their signature drinks, the Maffioso, consisting of deep, roasty espresso, milk, and a smooth caramel finish. It was very reminiscent of a Carmello candy bar.

Spill the Beans Greenville SC Places to Eat

9. Strossner’s Bakery, Cafe & Deli

21 Roper Mountain Rd, Greenville, SC 29607, map

Everything is made from scratch, so you know that quality is *chef’s kiss*. Locals love their quiches and crepes and we love that they offer plenty of gluten free options.

10. Takosushi

34 S Main St, Greenville, SC 29601, map

Picking between tacos and sushi is always a difficult choice. It’s great that Takosushi has both. Get that side of queso with your spicy tuna roll, because you can.

Takosushi Greenville SC

11. Soby’s New South Cuisine

207 S Main St, Greenville, SC 29601, map

Soby’s New South Cuisine was another booth we visited at the Fall for Greenville festival. Their crab cake truly set the expectations for the rest of our time there. It was a blend of jumbo lump crab over a creamy corn remoulade. I topped it off with a dash of hot sauce.

Everyone there was super friendly, too. Talk about southern hospitality!

Soby's Greenville SC

12. Jamaica Mi Irie

28 S Main St, Greenville, SC 29601, map

Jaimaica Mi Irie is a Main Street veteran serving up authentic Jamaican favorites. We had their jerk wings and jerk pork, both of which were cooked to perfection. The portion sizes are pleasing without making you feel in need of your stretchy pants. This place does not serve your run-of-the-mill food!

Local Tip: Everything on their menu is under $15.

13. The Lazy Goat

170 Riverplace, Greenville, SC 29601, map

Located next to the Hampton Inn by Hilton, The Lazy Goat came highly recommended by a local we met at our hotel bar. We were looking for good Mediterranean food and decided to pick up a couple of things to try.

Everything was super fresh, and out of everything we tried, the toasted shrimp and Brussels sprouts were my favorite. They have a large patio that overlooks the Reedy River, great for people watching.

Local Tip: You’ve got to try the fried goat cheese! It’s dusted with pistachio crumbles and drizzled in honey. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and savory. – Kelly, Greenville local of 12 years.

Visiting Congaree National Park? Don’t miss these things!

I’m terrified of bugs. Ask Jacob. I’ll be scrolling through Instagram and even if a photo of a bug comes up, I chuck my phone across the room. I still remember reading books in biology class where I would have to cover up the photo before I could read the page (so I promise no pictures of bugs!).

When we were heading to Congaree National Park with Experience Columbia SC, I started to do some research and saw that one of the things repeatedly mentioned was… the bugs. I just about had an anxiety attack right then and there.

7 Unique Things to Do in Congaree National Park

So why would I put myself through that?

I hate the idea that a fear can hold me back from doing something that I truly enjoy. I still have fond memories of summer nights as a kid playing outside chasing fireflies as they light up the night. Sometime as I grew older, I learned to fear bugs.  When I found out that there was a place where hundreds of them blink in synchronization, I knew I had to see this phenomenon for myself. Maybe it was about time to get over my fear of bugs.

If you’re visiting South Carolina or like exploring all the National Parks like us, you need to visit Congaree National Park. We put together a list of all the best things to do here and our experiences with each.

1. Hiking a Trail at Congaree National Park

Hiking is one of the best ways to see Congaree National Park. There is a short Boardwalk Trail, multiple established trails, and you can even explore the backcountry. Since we only had a short time at the park (and Esther is deathly afraid of bugs), we only explore the Boardwalk Trail, but we were still able to see how full of life the park is.

Established Hiking Trails in Congaree National Park

  • Boardwalk Loop Trail (2.4 miles) – An elevated trail that takes you through the old-grown hardwood forest. There is also a brochure you can pick up at the Visitor Center to learn more about the natural and cultural history. Watch out for spiders on the boardwalk.
  • Bluff Trail (1.7 miles) – Takes you through a young forest of loblolly and longleaf pines.
  • Sims Trail (3.2 miles) – Follows an old gravel road and crosses the site of a hunt club where Harry Hampton was once a member.
  • Weston Lake Loop Trail (4.4 miles) – Gives you great views of Cedar Creek.
  • Oakridge Trail (7 miles) – Hike through old-growth forest, along a subtle ridge, and keep your eye out for wildlife like deer and turkey.
  • River Trail (10.4 miles) – Hike to Congaree River through dense vegetation.
  • Kingsnake Trail (11.7 miles) – A favorite for birders.
  • Bates Ferry Trail (2.2 miles) – Follow a 1920s ferry road south to the Congaree.
  • Longleaf Trail (0.3 miles) – Short train from Bluff Trail that gives access to Longleaf Campground.
  • Fork Swamp Trail (0.6 miles) – This trail is the newest in the park and gives access to the Fork Swamp area of the park
Want to make the most of your visit to Congaree National Park South Carolina? Save this pin and click through to find a list of the best things to do in Congaree National Park, when to visit to see the synchronous fireflies, how to best see the Congaree river, and what you should pack for your trip. This is one of the best places to visit in south carolina. // Local Adventurer #localadventurer #discoverSC #southcarolina #visittheusa #realcolumbiasc

2. Go on a Guided Walk and Talk

If you want to learn more about the natural and cultural history of the park, go on a guided walk and talk led by park rangers or volunteers. You can see what is planned on the Schedule of Events.

  • Nature Discovery Walk – A knowledgeable volunteer naturalist takes you along the boardwalk and tells you more about the park wildlife and plant life.
  • Big Tree Hike – John Cely, the park founder, takes you on a 3-hour and 5-mile hike to some of the National Park’s big trees.

3. Canoe or Kayak on the Congaree River

If you want to see the park from a different angle, you can hop in a canoe or kayak and follow the marked Cedar Creek Canoe Trail. This route is approximately 15 miles and takes you through some of the most beautiful portions of the park. We loved being able to kayak up to the bald cypress trees.

Note: Stay midstream. Watch out for snakes, poison ivy vines, spiders, wasps and other stinging insects along and in the river (especially in the summer). Snakes and spiders falling into your canoe or kayak are the biggest reasons people tend to flip. Be sure to check in with the Visitor Center to find out current conditions, but here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • You must bring your canoe or kayak.
  • The park does not rent canoes or kayaks but there are outfitters in Columbia, SC.
  • Have all the appropriate equipment (personal floatation device, whistle, weather appropritate clothes, water, food, sunscreen, and insect repellent).
  • Water levels can affect the visibility of the canoe trail markers.
  • Always carry a map and compass regardless of how long you plan on paddling.
  • Water levels can fluctuate up to 10 feet on the creek – be aware of what they are before starting.
  • When the water levels are high, the current can be unpredictable and dangerous.
  • Downed trees and log jams are common.
  • If you see an obstacle along the trail, report it to the park ranger so they can pass along that information.

Bonus: Paddle the Congaree River Blue Trail

For the serious paddlers, check out this 50-mile designated trail. It runs from Columbia to Congaree National Park. Starting the trail in an urban environment really shows you the contrast as you continue to float downstream and enter the National Park. Although it’s only 50 miles, it feels like you’re in a completely different world.

4. Go on a Ranger Led Canoe Tour

If you are a novice paddler or don’t want to bother with your own equipment, sign up for a Ranger Led Canoe Tour. These only happen in the Spring (usually in April and May) and Fall (September to mid-November) on Friday and Saturdays. As they expertly guide you along the river, they will tell you more about the natural and cultural history of the park.

I highly recommend doing this if you visit during the tour season. It’s amazing how calming it can be as you float down the river, and something about not being on a trail made it feel like I was exploring untouched land.

The tour lasts roughly 3.5-4 hours and each tour is limited to 12 people. Reservations can be made through Recreation.gov and each month’s tours open for reservation on the first of the prior month. The park staff will cancel tours for a number of reasons, like inclement weather, high winds, or unsafe water conditions.

Participants must meet the following requirement:

  • At least one person must have experience.
  • At least one adult (18 or older) must be in each canoe
  • Children must be at least 6 years old
  • Participants must know how to swim without the aid of a flotation device

The park provides all canoes, paddles, and personal flotation devices, you are responsible for:

  • Weather appropriate clothes.
  • Footwear that straps or ties around feet (flip flops or Crocs are not permitted).
  • Water (at least 1 liter per person)
  • Snacks
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect Repellent

5. Catch the Synchronous Fireflies

This is the biggest highlight of the park. Every year sometime between mid-May and mid-June, visitors flock to the park to see the awe-inspiring display of the synchronous fireflies (photuris frontalis). They do this as they search for mates. There are only three known places in the Western Hemisphere that are known to have fireflies that synchronize their flashes and Congaree National park is one of these places!

This was the main reason we visited the park, but unfortunately, we missed the fireflies by two days! After dark, we were still able to see plenty of fireflies but we’ll have to visit again to catch the synchronous fireflies in the future. You can look up photos of what they look like here. They generally stay near the ground and look so trippy! Since we missed out, I just put together layers and layers of fireflies we saw that night, but these were not even the same species of firefly. Did you know that fireflies only live a couple weeks for the purpose of mating and die shortly after they mate?

Viewing Tips:

  • The Visitor Center is open for extended hours during the Synchronous Fireflies Season (usually until 10 PM).
  • You can find updates on the fireflies here.
  • Because of the large number of attendees, there is a designed Fireflies trail that gives access to the best viewing areas.
  • Wear closed toed shoes as there are roots and biting insects along the trail.
  • Setting up chairs, hammocks, and/or blankets is not allowed.
  • If you plan on using insect repellent, apply it BEFORE entering the park. It repellent will affect the fireflies.
  • Flashlights should only be used when absolutely necessary and when used, they should be pointed at the ground.
  • If you plan on shooting, do not use flash. This should be obvious for any photographer.
  • Parking is very limited. Carpool if possible. Arrive at 6 to get a decent parking spot (since there are only 50 established spots) otherwise you have to walk.  During the 2018 season, there were over 600 cars and 1000 people on the busiest night.
  • Do not capture fireflies in jars or take them with you.
  • Unlike fireflies when they normally fly around, they usually only hover 3-4 feet above ground during synchronization.

6. Camping

There are two designated campgrounds in Congaree National Park:

  • Longleaf Campground has 10 individual and 4 group camping sites. Individual sites can have up to 3 tents and 8 people, group sites can have up to 10 tents and between 9 to 24 people. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table, and there are two vault toilets at the front of the campground. Fees: $15 per night for individual sites, $25 per night for group sites.
  • Bluff Campground has no vehicle access so you have to carry in your own equipment. There are 6 individual sites that allow up to 3 tents and 8 people. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table, and there are no restrooms. Fees: $10 per night for individual sites.

You can also Backcountry Camp for free, but you must get a permit at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center on the day of your arrival to the park. To obtain a permit, you must have a valid state-issued ID.

More helpful info:

  • You can get water 24 hours a day at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center.
  • Camping in Congaree is tent only (no RV or car camping).
  • You can camp up to 14 consecutive days, and no more than 28 days in a six month period.
  • Fires are only permitted in designated fire rings and firewood must be purchased from a local supplier (must provide receipt) or wood that is certified USDA pest free (must have original packaging). You cannot bring in any other wood, and dead wood can be collected from surrounding areas for fires, but you cannot cut live trees down.

7. Fishing

Congaree National Park is also a great place to fish and is allowed with a valid South Carolina fishing license. It is permitted in all areas of the park except for the Weston Lake overlook and the area 100 feet around the overlook.

What you can catch: Catfish, bream, crappie and others can be caught in Cedar Creek or in Oxbow lakes and striped bass on the Congaree river.

What You Need to Know Before You Go

Congaree National Park is amongst a humid subtropical climate. Although you can visit during any season, the best time to go is spring and fall because the weather is best. Note that almost 80% of the park is within the floodplain of the Congaree River, which means flooding occurs throughout the year (usually about ten times a year).

  • Spring (March to May) – Best time to visit the park. Highs of mid to upper 70s and insects are generally not a problem during this time. The park has an official mosquito meter that goes from mild to war zone.
  • Summer (June to August) – This is the hottest time of the year with temperatures up to the 90s with high humidity. Thunderstorms are common and can occur with little to no warning. We visited in early June, where it was hot and humid and the mosquitoes were out for blood. However, it’s the only time you can see the synchronous fireflies.
  • Fall (September to November) – Average daily temperatures in the 70s with low humidity. Fall colors peak between late October and early November. Water levels are ideal for paddling on Cedar Creek.
  • Winter (November to February) – Mild temperatures with highs of the mid-50s. Nighttime can dip below freezing. Flooding is most frequent this time of year.

Visitor Center & Fees

Entrance to Congaree National Park is free. The Harry Hampton Visitor Center is open 7 days a week, 9 AM to 5 PM (closed on federal holidays). Trail maps, brochures, water, and restrooms are available at the Visitor Center breezeway 24 hours a day.

Directions

Since some GPS devices don’t give accurate directions, use the following address for driving directions: 100 National Park Road, Hopkins, SC. The nearest major airport is Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE).

Best Places to Stay

With Columbia, SC so close, you can stay in the city and visit the park each day. We stayed at Hotel Trundle, which is Main Street’s first boutique hotel, and we absolutely loved our room. It was really convenient to downtown and the staff was so friendly. When you want to head to the park, it’s only 30 minutes away and less than 20 miles.

Visiting Columbia South Carolina? Don’t miss these things!

When we headed down to Columbia SC, our main goal was to spend time in Congaree National Park. But after a few days in town, we fell in love with its charm, food scene, and felt right at home with its Southern hospitality.

Columbia is the Capital of South Carolina. It was named after Christopher Columbus and is famed as the first planned cities in America.

15 Fun Things to Do in COlumbia SC That You Can’t Miss

1. Columbia SC Zoo – Zipline and Feed Giraffes at Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden

500 Wildlife Pkwy + 1300 Botanical Pkwy, map

We went to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden for the zip line but stuck around for the animals. The 170-acre zoo has won awards for excellence as an attraction and its conservation efforts, but what makes this place unique is that it offers so many different activities and fun things to do with kids in Columbia SC. You can feed giraffes, stroll through the botanical garden, and a zip line that goes over the Saluda River.

Local Tip: In an effort to continue its conservation efforts, they have gotten rid of straws. If you really need one for your beverages, pick up your own stainless steel straws. We were drinking Icees with a spoon.

2. Columbia Museum of Art

1515 Main St, map

We got to preview the newly renovated museum and I really love how they’re changing up how art museums display their art. Rather than presenting their galleries by time periods or art types, the Columbia Museum of Art will be showcasing their collection thematically. That way you can compare art about a certain topic and how different time periods and cultures interpret it.

It really earns its place as one of the must-see Columbia SC attractions, and we loved how involved they are in the community. Plus, they have some notable pieces like Monet’s View of the Seine.

Local Tip: Keep an eye out for their other events, like block parties, concerts, art classes, and more.

3. Congaree National Park →

100 National Park Rd, Hopkins, map

Obviously, we love the National Parks, so Congaree National Park was high priority when we visited Columbia. You can hike the boardwalk, kayak down the river, or stop by at night to see the fireflies light up the sky.

Local Tip: If you’re scared of bugs like me, just know there are A LOT of them. Don’t forget to spray yourself down with mosquito repellent before you enter the park, so you don’t disrupt the fireflies. If you can, plan your trip around the synchronous fireflies. It’s a rare phenomenon and we have more details on our Congaree National Park post.

4. Add Your Love Locks on Lake Murray Dam

1836 N Lake Dr, map

If you’re looking for romantic activities and creative date ideas in Columbia SC, this one’s a perfect way to create a memory you can come back to and reminicse. You can leave your very own love locks on Lake Murray Dam. Don’t worry, the love locks are allowed and encouraged here.

Local Tip: Map to the ‘Dreher Shoals Dam Parking Lot’ to get right next to the love locks.

Stroll along and the 1.7 mile pedestrian walkway, watch the sunset, and if you want to spend the whole day in the area, Lake Murray has 650 miles of shoreline. The area is great for camping, paddle boarding, kayaking, you can rent a boat and more.

5. Art Walk in Downtown Columbia SC – Murals + Instagram Spots

1219 Taylor Street, map

Another one of our favorite things to do in a new city is to check out the street art. It’s a great way to explore downtown on foot, and there are some great photo ops too.

They even have a organization that helps to curate the street art, and they’ve even put together an online directory of all the art and murals in Columbia SC. Our favorites:

  • Middle of Nowhere (the one picture below) by Osamu Kobayashi
  • Tunnel Vision Mural (popular)
  • World’s Largest Fire Hydrant

Local Tip: Use #muralsofcolumbia on Instagram to find even more spots.

6. South Carolina State Farmer’s Market

3483 Charleston Hwy, map

At South Carolina State Farmer’s Market, you can find fresh produce, delicious baked goods, and gardening supplies. If you’re looking for specific types of produce, check out their harvest calendar.

Local Tip: Get food at Judy’s at the Market for some spectacular southern dishes.

7. Soda City Market in DOwntown Columbia SC (Saturdays Only)

Main Street, map

Fun Fact: In case you’re wondering why Columbia is called Soda City, locals shorten Columbia to Cola, which eventually included Soda. We didn’t get a chance to stay for Soda City but everyone we met talked about it. Every Saturday morning, they shut down Main Street and all the locals come hang out and shop for fresh fruits and vegetables, browse the local art, and watch the street performers. It’s a local favorite and something visitors should see too.

Local Tip: There is free parking throughout Columbia on the weekends (no matter what you see on signs and stickers).

9. Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park / Riverwalk

312 Laurel St, map

Whether you’re on the east or west side of the river, there are paved walkways that you can walk along to enjoy the views of the river. If you’re looking for something more active, it’s a popular trail for runners, cyclist, and joggers, and there are even companies that will take you tubing down the river.

Local Tip: The park is the site of the original Columbia waterworks, which was the first textile mill in the world that was operated by electricity. Take time to walk through the old mills and read about the history.

10. Harbison State Forest – an Environmental Education FOrest

5600 Broad River Rd, map

This is a great spot to head if you love the outdoors. There are 18 miles of hiking trails, a canoe landing, and picnic shelters, and it’s only nine miles from the center of town. Portions of the forest are also used to demonstrate modern forestry practices.

11. South Carolina State House

1100 Gervais St, map

Since Columbia is the Capital of South Carolina, stop by the South Carolina State House. We started at the gift shop to pick up complimentary maps that tell you more about the interior and exterior gardens. They also offer free tours taking your through the inner corridors. The schedule is dependent on if legislature is in session.

Local Tip: Look for the five stars along the building’s exterior where Union cannonballs struck the building during the Civil War.

1601 Richland St, map

For those of you who are history buffs or just like taking photos on swings, head to the Historic Homes & Garden District. All of the gardens are open to the public, and you can schedule tours for the houses. Here are some of the notable homes to help you get started:

  • Hampton Preston Mansion & Gardens – One of Columbia’s oldest remaining structures that was built in 1818. It’s been a private home, the site of four different colleges, and even partitioned for commerical use.
  • Robert Mills House & Gardens – One of five National Historic Landmarks in Columbia, this is a popular spot for weddings because of its beautiful grounds.
  • Mann-Simons Site – Historically a collection of commercial and domestic spaces owned and operated by the same African American family from 1843 – 1970.
  • Woodrow Wilson Family Home – South Carolina’s only remaining presidential site, this was the home to 14-year-old “Tommy” Woodrow Wilson.

14. Saluda SHoals Park

5605 Bush River Rd, map

Saluda Shoals Park, just outside of downtown, is great for a leisurely afternoon by the river. There are trails along the park, but you can also play in the water. Rent a canoe or kayak, float down the river, and there’s even a splash pad for kids.

15. Edventure

211 Gervais St, map

If you’re visiting Columbia with kids, you need to visit the EdVenture. It’s the largest children’s museum in the Southeast. One of the coolest exhibits is Eddie. This 40 foot tall plastic kid greets you as you enter, and kids can climb all over him, including his insides. The exhibit allows children to explore his organs to learn more about anatomy.

In addition to that, there is an exhibit that teaches kids about caring for their four-legged friends, an inventor’s lab where they can build projects, and they can even climb on a real fire engine. It’s easy to see why this is one of the top things to do with kids in Columbia SC.

Things to Do in Columbia SC Map

Where to Eat – Restaurants in Columbia SC

  • Bodhi Thai Dining (126 E Main St, map) – This was easily the best meal we had during our trip. The food was so good that we even made it a point to compliment the chef. Photos are below. Look how pretty the dumplings are!
  • Cinnamon Roll Deli (2617 Devine St, map) – Maybe I’m just not that into cinnamon rolls, but I didn’t get the hype of them here. The bagel sandwiches on the other hand was amazing. I don’t ever like to say the word “best” but when I bit into it, I told Jacob it was the best bagel sandwich I’ve had (and we’re bagel snobs after having lived in NYC).
  • Drip Coffee (1441 Main St, map) – Coffee + Easy grab and go breakfast. The Honey Vanilla Latte is a legend here. I ended up ordering the Jalapeno Honey Latte which sounds like such a risky choice, but it ended up being really good!
  • Motor Supply Co Bistro (920 Gervais St, map) – The menu changes daily based on what they can source from local spots. We loved the shrimp and grits.
  • The War Mouth (1209 Franklin St, map) – This is a local favorite and reminds us of restaurants in Portland. It has a trendy vibe with equally creative dishes. If you’re into pickles like me, you won’t be disappointed by the pickle plate.
  • Sweet Cream Company (1627 Main St, map) – A perfect stop for a hot day with unique ice cream flavors.
  • Cantina 76 (1301 Main St, map) – Stop by for tacos and the Tres Hombres sampler

Where to Stay in Columbia SC

During our trip to Columbia, we stayed at the Hotel Trundle. We can’t say enough good things about this place.

First off, when we arrived the staff greeted us like old friends. During check-in, you get a choice of a glass of wine or beer. Since we got in late, we took our beers to our room. The room was spacious and comfortable. We loved all the details and really wanted to move in to the space. The common space was decorated well too, and it was a great place to work or hangout.

On top of that, the location is right in the heart of downtown. You can walk to all the main street attractions and everything else is a short drive away.

Visiting Charleston? Here are the best places to eat!

Charleston is the oldest and second-largest city in South Carolina. It has cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, and tons of old historic houses that have led many to call Charleston the cultural capital of the south. There are a ton of restaurants to choose from, so we’ve created a list of the best places to eat in Charleston SC with the help of our friend Katy Blair Connor, a local Charleston resident.

If you love seafood, this is the city for you. It’s fresh, often caught right off the coast, and prepared in numerous ways that will make your mouth do a little dance. Welcome to the south, y’all!

Visiting Charleston South Carolina? Don’t miss these spots.

Charleston, South Carolina is just under four hours away from our home in Asheville and it’s become a place we love to visit. There’s just so much to love about this city on the water. For starters, it’s often a little warmer in the winter months than it is in the mountains.

It also has tons of outdoor activities for you to participate in such as kayaking, hiking, bird watching, and horseback riding. In addition, Charleston is rich with history and unique architecture, incredible restaurants, and of course, southern hospitality. There is no shortage of fun and interesting things to do in this city.

Essential Tips for First Time Visitors to CHarleston SC

  • Best time to visit Charleston: Personally we love the springtime because the weather is really pleasant. Daytime temperatures range from the mid-60’s to the high 70’s. You can expect hotel rates to increase along with the crowds in the springtime (especially around Easter) but if you don’t mind paying extra and dealing with more people, there’s a lot to love about traveling here in spring. Summer temps get up to the mid to high 80’s and August is the rainiest month. Be prepared for humidity! September to November is peak tourist season so competition for lodging and large crowds are something to consider. The winters are mild (temps rarely dip below 40 degrees) and since it’s the off-season, you can find hotel deals.
  • Pack Layers: Be sure to pack layers so that you can adapt to the change in temperatures which can sometimes dip 10-15 degrees when the sun dips below the horizon.
  • Parking: There are 13 garages and two non-metered lots in Charleston and all of them accept cash and credit cards. The rates are $1 per half hour and $16 max per day. There are also 7 metered lots so bring lots of quarters. Time limits range from 30 minutes max to 10 hours max at $1 per hour.
  • Extended Parking: If you find a good parking spot and want to stay put for an extended period of time, consider getting around on foot or bike.
  • Head Out of the City: If you have time to spend some time outside of the city, book a scenic-view or oceanfront vacation rental on Kiawah Island, a naturally preserved island that’s just 45 minutes from the city of Charleston. Greet the morning from a beachfront balcony or palmetto-shaded porch, and spend the day exploring a Lowcountry village, 11 miles of beach, and world-class golf courses.
  • Get a Charleston Tour PassIf you plan on doing multiple activities, check out this tour pass where you can save on 40+ attractions.
