They are 6 hours north of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/localadventurer.com\/category\/north-america\/usa\/california\/san-francisco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Francisco<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and 6 hours south of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/localadventurer.com\/category\/north-america\/usa\/oregon\/portland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Portland OR<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time we drove through, we were confused with so many parks and forests with Redwoods in the name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike other National Parks, Redwood National Park partners with 3 California Redwoods State Parks (RSP): Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Many people refer to the collective parks as Redwood National Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combined, these parks cover over 130,000 acres with nearly 40,000 of them being old-growth redwood forests. Fern Canyon, Prairie Creek RSP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>41.400661,-124.0665442, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Fern+Canyon\/@41.400661,-124.0665442,18z\/data=!4m9!1m2!2m1!1sfern+canyon+trailhead!3m5!1s0x54d10175fe7e5521:0x72ff3bae1b0a4ab9!8m2!3d41.4016482!4d-124.0650094!15sChVmZXJuIGNhbnlvbiB0cmFpbGhlYWRaFyIVZmVybiBjYW55b24gdHJhaWxoZWFkkgEGcmF2aW5lmgEjQ2haRFNVaE5NRzluUzBWSlEwRm5TVVF3YmtweGEweEJFQUU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">map<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was by far the most popular spot we visited in Redwood National Park. If you feel like you\u2019re in a scene of Jurrasic Park while walking through Fern Canyon, that\u2019s because you are. They filmed scenes from The Lost World here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The roughly one-mile trail follows Home Creek through the forest. You walk through modest streams while the vertical walls are covered in a variety of ferns (there are five different kinds) and other moisture-loving plants and mosses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can hike as little as 0.5 miles to see the pretty parts or up to 5 miles through the whole canyon. There are other trails you can continue on that take you out of the canyon to see it from above too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting to the easiest trailhead is straightforward, but you have to drive on a dirt road for about 6.5 miles. There are a few spots where you have to navigate over streams and holes, one of which looked sketchy. Our sedan was able to make it through but only after following the example of another smaller car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other people got out of their cars trying to suss out if they could make it. If it recently rained, the streams may be deeper and impassable. Check out&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitredwoods.com\/listing\/fern-canyon-in-prairie-creek-redwoods-sp\/464\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">driving directions here<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/redw\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">road\/trail conditions here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff865c;\"><strong>Local Tip:<\/strong><\/span> There is an $8 fee to get in, but there isn\u2019t always an attendant at the pay station. If no one is there, you need exact change (or a check if you still have those) to put in the envelope you fill out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff865c;\"><strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong><\/span> Have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/go.localadventurer.com\/tropicfeel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">water shoes<\/a>&nbsp;you don\u2019t mind getting wet or good&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/go.localadventurer.com\/danner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waterproof boots<\/a>. Lady Bird Johnson Grove, Redwood NP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>41.3034279,-124.0203284, Redwood National Park,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Lady+Bird+Johnson+Grove+Trail\/@41.3034279,-124.0203284,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x54d10ff9b0113c51:0x59726d119bb90c3a!8m2!3d41.3034239!4d-124.0181344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">map<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a popular first or last hike in the redwoods since it\u2019s located on the southern end of the park. It\u2019s an easy 1.5-mile loop trail and was named after Lady Bird Johnson, who promoted the protection of natural habitats as First Lady. Look out for the plaque dedicated to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the Redwood hikes look similar, but we loved the big footbridge at the start of the hike here. There\u2019s a patch of light that hits it through the thick canopy above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff865c;\"><strong>Local Tip:<\/strong><\/span> The scenic drive up Bald Hills Road is narrow and windy. Tall Trees Grove, Redwood NP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>41.2081242,-124.0106467, Redwood National Park,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Tall+Trees+Grove+Trailhead+Parking\/@41.2081242,-124.0106467,14z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x54d1126888bfbacd:0x60cb646ccf6660dd!8m2!3d41.2081202!4d-123.9931319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">map<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tall Trees Grove is another highly trafficked spot in Redwood National Park but also the most difficult to reach out of the major attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To protect Tall Trees Grove, a permit is required to do the hike, and they limit it to 50 parties each day. In addition to that, the 4-mile hike has 1,600 feet of elevation change and the grove is only in the last section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re limited on time, I would skip this since it will take 3-6 hours. Only go if you\u2019re in the area for longer or are particularly interested in former Tallest Trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Libbey Tree, which is the only former Tallest Tree you can see is located in this grove. Stourt Grove, Jedediah Smith RSP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>41.7896912,-124.087016,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Stout+Grove+Trailhead\/@41.7896912,-124.087016,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x54d0697942a89857:0x3a068971ec15d390!8m2!3d41.7896872!4d-124.084822\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">map<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stout Grove was the furthest north we went. It\u2019s a short 0.5-mile hike, but it was one of our favorite things to do in Redwood National Park. The fallen trees among the concentration of tall trees still standing made this hike more dramatic and unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We went around sunrise and were fortunate enough to have the trail to ourselves, but during the summer, it\u2019s a very popular trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also pop out to check out Smith River or extend the hike by connecting other trails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff865c;\"><strong>Local Tip:<\/strong><\/span> During the summer, visit between 4-5 PM for the best light. The sun is able to shine through a break in the canopy over Mill Creek. At other times of the year, the sun isn\u2019t at the right angle for the light beams. Klamath River Overlook, Del Norte Coast RSP<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>41.5544132,-124.0888776, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Klamath+River+Overlook\/@41.5544132,-124.0888776,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x54d05703bebf5ef7:0x847a94c6dfc7d652!8m2!3d41.5544092!4d-124.0866836\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">map<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the divide, it looks like a large sandbar with the mouth of the Klamath River on the left and the Pacific Ocean on your right. You can follow a steep trail if you want to get a closer look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is also a great spot for birding and to look for marine life. You may even catch gray whiles migrating in the spring and fall. Just be sure to bring some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/go.localadventurer.com\/binoculars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">binoculars<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff865c;\"><strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong><\/span> The view from the overlook wasn\u2019t as nice as the one further down the road. You hike through redwoods, maples, ferns, and half a mile in, you\u2019ll find the small waterfall that you can see from a bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can turn around at the waterfall or do the full loop totaling 3.1 miles. The 1.5-mile hike is easy to follow and passes under tree tunnels and wild berries. During our visit in October, there were a ton of berries that you can pick and eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you arrive at the beach, you are standing over a beautiful rock arch. During low tide, it\u2019s a popular place to explore tidepools. Be sure to check out the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tideschart.com\/United-States\/California\/Del-Norte-County\/Enderts-Beach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">tide chart<\/a>\u00a0before visiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We went right as the tide was coming in and cut it close. We were able to get through the arch but got owned by some waves when we weren\u2019t paying attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m blaming Jacob for this one. It\u2019s a quick stop and a popular place to look for whales. You can explore up to 70 miles of Coastal Trail within the parks with opportunities to tidepool, enjoy sandy beaches, and awe at the jagged coastlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several access points, and it\u2019s mostly continuous in the parks except for a detour over the Klamath River. There are a handful of backcountry camps that you can get permits for too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The California Coastal Trail aims to encourage non-motorized transportation and help foster appreciation and stewardship of the coast. The goal is to create an interconnected public trail system that runs over 1,230 miles from Oregon to Mexico. Kayak on the Coast with Kayak Trinidad<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>1148 Big Lagoon Park Rd, Trinidad, CA 95570,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Kayak+Trinidad+at+Big+Lagoon\/@41.1631089,-124.133001,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x54d1157da63b0db9:0xe29a2ae7b36dfc20!8m2!3d41.1631049!4d-124.130807\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">map<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve kayaked in many places, and Trinidad Harbor is easily some of the most spectacular coastal paddling we\u2019ve done. Kayak Trinidad has a few launching points for their guided paddles and has an amazing staff that walks you through everything you need to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They provided wetsuits, a quick lesson on how to paddle, and then helped us launch off the coast without getting wet. Once we were on the water, they guided us around different landmarks, and we saw pelicans, sea lions, and starfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have wildlife tours, and if you go during the spring (late February to mid-May) you can even see whales. It\u2019s the longest skywalk in the western US and gets you up to 100 feet above the ground below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a great way to see the redwoods from a different vantage point, and there\u2019s a mix of static and swinging bridges. It costs $10 to get in, and in addition, they have a&nbsp;<strong>drive on tree<\/strong>&nbsp;and other cute photos spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff865c;\"><strong>Local Tip:<\/strong><\/span> Fold in your side mirrors. Unlike other parks we\u2019ve been to, there didn\u2019t seem to be much concern with them. But you should always use the bear safe bins to dispose of your trash and have a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/go.localadventurer.com\/bear-canister\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bear food canister<\/a>&nbsp;if you\u2019re camping. Otherwise, you should know basic bear safety. After you know what you\u2019re interested in doing, put it all into a map so you\u2019re not going back and forth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>There are no hotels or restaurants in the park<\/strong>, but there are smaller towns nearby where you can grab food. Depending on the season, they are closed on certain days of the week. We picked up a bunch of snacks at the Target in Eureka so we wouldn\u2019t have to worry about it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Watch the tides.<\/strong>&nbsp;Tides can come in quickly and in some spots will close off access to areas. Check the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tides.willyweather.com\/ca\/del-norte-county\/enderts-beach.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">tide charts<\/a>&nbsp;here. Tsunamis can also occur so know where the high ground spots are.&nbsp;When you\u2019re anywhere along the coast, beware of sneaker waves. They typically come out of nowhere and come much higher than other waves. Esther got nailed by a tiny one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fill up on gas.<\/strong>&nbsp;There are no stations in the park, and you don\u2019t want to be stranded with no service.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cell reception can be spotty.<\/strong>&nbsp;We downloaded google maps and Alltrails app while in town to ensure we could find our way around.
